"Lord Jakob is apparently on some other mission", Meli huffs over breakfast, "But he's gonna come help in less than a week. A week? Really? We have to sit tight for a week! CeCe? Are you even listening?"
I finally pull my eyes away from the strange looking scrambled eggs to look at her. While I'm sitting here with a mess of bed hair and my nightshirt she's all done up with her hair cleanly straightened and face powdered. Today she's decided to wear some denim mini-shorts and a slightly baggy singlet. Shorts are definitely a novelty of Earth since back at The Estate it's either dresses and skirts or our navy hunting pants.
"We have to stay here another week", I mutter unconvincingly.
"Really, CeCe? You think I wouldn't notice you staring so dreamily at nothing? What is it? Did you finally remember that dream of yours and it was actually about your and Lord Jakob's wedding? Is it, right?"
I'm ashamed that her constant mention of Lord Jakob is actually making me feel jealous. Hadn't someone told me the two of them had been together? It didn't take much thinking to remember it was Hanbin. I'd spent all night telling him stories of his own deeds. It'd all been in a dream though, so I'm well rested but his lack of reaction or even acknowledgement of his killings is annoying me. That and the fact that since I first saw his face in that crowd yesterday I feel like there's something I've forgotten. Meli might think that it's all just a lie but then why would Hanbin allow me to remember last night's dream?

"Oi!" sparkling nails snap into my vision as Meli clicks her fingers in front of my eyes. "There you go again. What's up?"
I shrug and poke at the scrambled-eggs-possibly-mashed-paper, "I'm just thinking."
Meli pauses for less than a second before waving her hand, "Continue."
"About the Daemon, if they're smart then it'll take more-"
Meli laughs, "I knew it! You should stop worrying so much. They tricked you once, but not again. You know now. When Lord Jakob arrives we'll-"
"Can you stop mentioning Lord Jakob?" I don't mean to snap, it just comes out that way.
Meli blinks, "Uh, why? I'm just trying to have an actual conversation unlike some other people who can't be screwed to wake up properly. It's just a dream, okay? You don't have to try to figure it out every single waking second!"
"It's not about my dream", I gasp, "I didn't even have it last night. This is about Lord Jakob and you."
"Oh please! These last few months it seems to be all you think about."
I purse my lips in annoyance but can't argue with that, it has been increasingly irritating me that I can't remember a dream I've had my whole life.
"And what the hell do you mean about 'Lord Jakob and me'? Since when has there been anything?"
"It's just something I heard", I shrug, "Look, just don't mention him and we'll be all good."
"He's our backup and your fiancé! Why can't we..." Meli's face suddenly looks intrigued, "The Daemons did this to you." Her voice is nearly a whisper as she leans over the tiny table towards me.
I lean back, "Hey! Personal space much? Just forget it, okay?"
"No. Not okay. If the Daemons have planted something in your head I want it out now. How should we do this?" she jumps to her feet.
"Do what?" I also jump to my feet, more so I have a decent chance of physically protecting myself if it comes down to it. "Meli? What are you thinking?"
"Just a little something-something", she ruffles through her suitcase frantically. "It won't hurt or anything."
Great, it's going to hurt.

"This is getting out of hand", I try to edge around her in order to reach the door.
"CeCe", Meli grabs me in a tight grip, "It won't hurt." She holds up a tiny, blue stone flecked with gold in her other hand. "You just need to lie with this on your forehead and meditate."
"Yeah, for three hours", I try to pull away again. It is one of the many stupid rituals the Prophet says is a must but always seems like total rubbish. "You don't really believe that, do you Meli?"
She shrugs, "Better to be safe. Seriously, CeCe, you haven't been yourself since you came back. All distant and confused and...angry. Please. It'll make me feel better."
I sigh heavily and take the stone, "Fine. Fine. I'll go waste three hours if it'll make you feel so much better."
"Thank you", she kisses my cheek lightly and lets my arm go. "We'll hang tight until backup comes and we'll be okay."
"Yes", is all I can say and even that manages to still sound angry. To avoid further worried glances from Meli I stalk to my bed and flop down, closing my eyes tightly and balancing the cool stone on my forehead. If it doesn't get rid of some 'Daemon mind control thing' it gives me a quiet three hours to plan my next move. I'd spent all night with Hanbin, not in so many words but so what, and not once had I felt threatened once I got passed the idea of him being there. It had actually been really easy to talk to him. It was the only thing I knew for certain: I recongised him. Forget stupid Daemon tricks and sneaky Fae tales, I knew Hanbin. He knew me, Meli, Jakob and the Prophet. His group knew me. Everything seems to lead back to one big, shiny idea. I need to go back and see Hanbin in real life again. I need to remember whatever it is he seems to think I forgot.
I need to remember if Meli and Jakob were actually together once.
