J A C O B

The heat was unbearable as I attempted to sleep. With nothing but a small fan blowing minimal air onto my sweating body, I felt like I might die. There was no chance of catching a wink of sleep at this rate. So, I sat there. I sat and sat until I became bored of it. And then I had an idea. A dumb idea, but an idea nonetheless.

I needed fresh air.

As quietly as humanly possible, I turned my doorknob and tiptoed out of my temporary bedroom. Past my grandparents room and down the creaky stairs I went. And soon enough, I was outside where it was still hot. I had no idea where I was going, but I knew I needed some sort of escape from my closed up little room.

I walked swiftly down the cracked sidewalks that were hardly lit with dim, flickering street lights. I began to remember these broken roads from the time I spent here when I was younger. It was all so different then. I was merely a little boy with a dream, wishing on the stars that were shining above me.

I was staring up at them in awe as I walked, because they were just so mesmerizing. Suddenly, my focus was shifted from the sky to the ground when someone slammed into me and knocked me down.

"Watch where you're going," I rolled my eyes at the person.

"I'm so sorry. I wasn't paying attention and I didn't see you. There normally isn't anyone out here at this hour." The voice said.

And I was annoyed until she looked up. Her eyes were impossibly prettier than the view of the stars and suddenly I needed to know her. I was too late to even catch her name by the time I noticed her already walking away into the darkness.

I shrugged it off and decided to make my way back to the house before my grandparents caught me. I couldn't get into trouble before the first day had even ended.
