Glow

Dimming streetlights ebb and fade and spark back into life
You've always found them calming
Sitting on curbs, counting the seconds between the death and rebirth of those iron lattice lamps
Watching them flicker and fade, and jump back to life
You watch the ephemeral nature of these bulbs and compare them to humanity
How the flame of our existence, is but a flickering and fading bulb
And how at any given moment, we could be extinguished
Observing streetlights on lonely nights, where the rain has put all but everyone inside
Those are the moments you truly shine
When your warmth and color can show past the exuberant glows of this damned city
Where your memories of your mother and father screaming at you mean nothing
Because you live under these sullen streetlights
And just like them you glow
Just like them you shine
Just like them you flicker
And one day
Just like them
You'll fade
Drift into nothing but a memory
And leave your own iron lattice frame
An ivory skeleton, no longer bearing the burden of a mind that simply knew too much
That watched the world so much
That it couldn't bring itself to partake
Simply observing from street corners
On dark and lonely nights
On dark and rainy nights
Until it was no more
Until only its ghostly glow remained
