3rd Person POV
After a long walk, Frisk and the Doctor finally managed to make it to Snowdin, thankfully not meeting Undyne anywhere on the way. Immediately upon entering the town, Frisk grabbed the Doctor's hand and began to drag him toward a large house.
"Wait. Where are we going?"
Frisk didn't answer and marched up to the door. They knocked three times briskly. At that moment, a tall skeleton opened the door, much to the Doctor's surprise.
"Human! What are you doing here? I respect your persistence, but we already agreed to be platonic friends!" He caught sight of the Doctor. "Hello... wait... is that another human?"
The Doctor stuffed his hands in his pockets. "Er, well not exactly. You see..." But Papyrus had already run back into the house. After a few moments, he ran back out. Pieces of complicated puzzles cradled in his arms. He began to set it up all around the house, before taking his place back at the doorstep.
"Human!"
"Actually I'm not..."
"You will not escape! I, the great Papyrus will capture you with some of my greatest puzzles! Then I will take you to the royal guard. Undyne will be so proud of me! Wowie! What a fun day this is! I made friends with one human, and captured another!"
The Doctor glanced at Frisk, who was stifling back laughter, then to the puzzle all around him. At first glance, it looked very complicated. Colored tiles, x and o mazes, spikes, small white dogs, and pretty much anything a great puzzle would need. However, upon closer inspection, all the different puzzles had loopholes, pathways, and mistakes that made the whole thing very easy.
Before the Doctor could even start on the puzzle, something unexpected happened. The small white dog wiggled free of the ropes attaching it to one of the many elements of the puzzle and began to absorb many different pieces. Before Papyrus had even been able to explain the rules, the whole thing had disappeared.
"What the- No! That meddling canine stole my whole puzzle!" He sat down on the doorstep and placed his skull in his hands. "Nyoo hoo hoo! I will never be a part of the royal guard! What will Undyne-" He was cut off by Sans suddenly appearing out of thin air next to him.
"'Sup, bro?" He said to Papyrus who immediately stood up.
"Sans! The stupid Annoying Dog took my puzzle! Now I won't be able to capture this human and join the royal guard!"
"Human, huh?" Sans said, glancing at the Doctor before exchanging a look with Frisk.
"I've been trying to tell you, I'm not-"
"In any case!" Papyrus said, cutting him off once again. "I will not stand to be defeated so easily! Come, human!"
Everyone watched as the Doctor's soul appeared in front of him as the fight with Papyrus began. Everyone looked shocked at the sight of his soul, which looked very different from a human one. Rather than having one solid color heart, his had two gray hearts, one facing up, one facing down, side by side, each faintly tinted orange.
"Oh... Well that's certainly something new," The Doctor asked in astonishment. Never, in his 900 years of life had something as strange as this happened before.
"never seen a human soul look like that before..." Sans said.
"What are you?" Frisk asked in amazement, before blushing slightly at how rude their question had sounded.
Even Papyrus was looking confused. "W-well! I see that you have a very peculiar looking soul, maybe... Undyne won't want me to capture you! Because... she said she wants a human soul, and... you don't look like..." Papyrus stopped talking, puzzled by the situation currently in front of him. Eventually, after a long minute of contemplation, he grinned.
"Well, if I can't capture you, I suppose I'm going to have to hang out with you!" He said before grabbing the Doctor's arm and dragging him inside the house, despite his protests. Frisk was about to follow them inside when they felt a hand on their shoulder.
"hey, kid," Sans said with a forced smile, "i never took you to grillby's like i usually do. whaddya say we go grab a bite to eat?"
Frisk nodded, before following him to Grillby's.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To be perfectly honest, the nice, cheery atmosphere of Grillby's was exactly what Frisk needed. Even when the whole world was breaking around them, the regulars were always happy to hang out and have some laughs.
"listen, kiddo," Sans said once they had found a spot to sit down. "i'm going to be honest with you... i don't trust you."
Frisk blinked in surprise, although this shouldn't have shocked them as much as it did.
"you might have changed since the last timeline, but i can't see why."
They shivered, remembering the feeling of the knife in their hand. A part of them wanted to hold it in their grasp once again. A part told them it wasn't too late.
"i don't even know why you did it in the first place. nobody made you get all that LV. and who's to say it won't happen again?"
Frisk looked up at him, a painful expression on their face. "Sans..."
"i can play along for now," Sans said, not letting them finish their thought. "but if you even think about repeating your actions,"
He blinked, his eyesockets going black as he spoke with dead seriousness.
"you're going to have so much worse than a bad time."
Frisk shook their head. They wouldn't go back. They wouldn't put everyone through that pain again. They wouldn't put themselves through that pain again.
Sans laughed. "well, if you insist on not doing that again, i suppose i'll just have to work with you. so, who was that you were hanging out with?"
Frisk breathed out a sigh of relief, grateful the discussion of their genocide was over. "He says his name is the Doctor."
"doctor, huh?" Sans said curiously, "great. i'm going to have to think of some really great medical puns for this one. give me a few hours and i'll have a skele-ton of 'em."
Frisk stifled back a small giggle at the horribly overused pun. Sans shrugged.
"well, i've kept you for long enough. why don't we go see what's going on back at the house?"
Frisk nodded and followed him out the door.
