Chapter 25

Last and first day of court this week, and the final weekend before I go back to school. I know it's going to be strange, but I want to get back to normal, to how my life should be.

When, Abigael told me I could lose my place at school, my heart sank. Everybody I know is in m school, and I'm used to it there. I'm not letting Marcus wreck that, he's already had a go and everything else I care about.

The day I arrived in court, journalists didn't have sympathy for me anymore. I couldn't run into the building hiding my face anymore, because of my feet. So, I just walked and shoved their microphones out my face.

When, I walk inside this time, there are more guards. It makes me feel like a prisoner, and Eliza is heavily guarded aswell. She gives me a reassuring smile, and I smile back. When, Marcus walks in, also with guards, he stares at me, looking into my soul. I stare right back, until my guard nudges me and I move my gaze elsewhere.

When, I'm called up, I tell the story of the night, Marcus broke in through my bedroom window. I also tell them about the text I received just hours before it happened, the judge looks stunned, although she knows all this already.

Then, when I'm called down, she calls Marcus up, and everyone in the room falls silent. For the first time in ages, their eyes aren't staring at me but at him. Wanting to hear his side of the story, wanting him to be sentenced today, wanting to know why he did it. And, even more importantly, how he did it.

The judge asks if my story was true, and he says it was. She then, charges him with breaking an entry, but doesn't say the amount of time given.

" We have gotten nowhere with this question before, and I would quite like to get to the bottom of it today!"

Her deep voice, leaves a stunned silence around the room.

" How did you keep those people alive for so long? It is impossible!"

Marcus sniggers, and replies steadily,

" I did it because it was simply an experiment."

" I didn't ask why!"

He looks around, as if that will help him come up with an answer.

" It's better than nothing, right?"

The way the tone of his voice had changed. Like the way you sound, when you've just been corrected.

Everyone stays silent, waiting for him to say something else. Yet, he stays silent, why I don't know. But, he eventually clears his throat.

" As I said before, you interrupted  me. It was simply an experiment. An experiment to see, if one could continue the life of a human being, you is close to death. At least that was the original idea, bring in the weak and prolong their life. But, healthy people came in, and well, we just couldn't let them out, could we?"

" You say we?"

The judge asks, I assume he means his colleagues, but he just smirks.

" Just a figure of speech."

" Liar!"

Eliza stand up, and I try to tug at her sleeve for her to sit down, but she pushes my hand away. I'm hurt by the gesture, but she's angry.

" What happened to all the meetings with your colleagues! We all know you couldn't run that place on your own! Where did you go all the time if it wasnt to be with them!"

She s went red and flustered in the face, and her eyes are focusing on Marcus. If looks could kill, it would be Eliza's. Marcus seems taken a back by this, and he just shrugs.
