AIGHT FUCKERS
This is the part you're probably gonna find boring. But you need this shit otherwise everything will go wrong.
Have you noticed how some people like to focus on the appearance of their OC rather than their story? Or just use the "bio isn't finished" excuse? I have.
Now, of course we can't blame them for not finishing. Take your time, bruh, but why post it when it isn't done?
A lot of the time back stories are shortened to simple bios, including likes and dislikes, but never any actual given detail to their past.
Now, there are countless Sues I could use as examples here. Nina, Jana, Charlie... The list goes on. But Jana's is probably the easiest to focus on.
Everyone seems to love the whole, "Bullied and depressed, hearing voices, suddenly snaps one day and kills them all" storyline. And let me be blunt with you: Do not ever do that. Ever. For one, it isn't scary at all, and it's so painfully overused it's become a Mary Sue trait.
Such topics as rape and abusive parents are commonly intended for sympathy that you're supposed to feel for the character, though this can go extremely off the tracks if done wrong. It's no doubt that rape is a light topic and a trigger for many, not even Sally's story got that right. Abuse and assault are so carelessly thrown in there without real reasoning when this character seems to be a typical attractive sweetheart who is depressed and all.
Another thing that happens as a result of the plotholed abuse is that it's used as the sole reason for the character's "snap": Take Jana for example, she got bullied and one day magically had the strength to rip a pipe off the wall and overcome a group of girls with it. Come on, people, you can do it better thaaaaaan, you can do it better than thaaaat (I swear, if anyone gets that Marina reference I will love you forever)
Wanna know the most commonly overused excuse for a backstory ever? Jeff rip-offs. People... Jeff's story wasn't even good. It was riddled with grammar and spelling mistakes and made no sense (FYI: Being burnt alive doesn't make your hair black and skin white. It burns you. Meaning your skin burns.) yet people always use the main progression and even the title "The Killer" for their OCs!
Mental disorders cannot be the only reason for the snap of sanity. I repeat, mental disorders cannot be the only reason for the snap of sanity. You shouldn't make your OC have mental disorders if you haven't researched about it and know how it works and what it causes. You can't just say, "Oh, I know the basics" or, "I have this so I automatically know everything about it" No. Not even people with depression would know entirely about it without being told about the specifics and searching about it.
Allow me to add yet another fault to many Mary Sues' stories: Slenderman always has to show up for no apparent reason and take them to his mansion. Okay, first of all, the mansion is fan made. Second, Slenderman would impale you on a tree after stalking you for months, or if he were to make you a Proxy, it wouldn't be saving you, it's torture. Proxies are slaves.
So! Going over what we've stated already, let's go over in short.
TL;DR:
Mary Sue traits for backstory:
• Short and underdeveloped story that has plotholes and not many reasons to some of the key plot points.
• Bullied and hated by everyone; is an outcast. Normally snaps because of this reason, or abuse.
• Parental abuse, parents hate them for no apparent reason and they have shitty home lives.
• Rape; never use this in a backstory for an OC unless you have a thorough understanding of the consequences, even then it isn't a very good idea.
• Story including other Creepypastas (e.g. They're related to them, best friends to them, and God forbid shipped with them)
• Jeff rip-off
• Blaming things on mental disorders when you haven't done research on it. Stop.
• Being a Slenderman Proxy, and then having normal bios that include normal stuff like drawing and music. I don't think slaves have time for that.
Just avoid all these points, and you should be good.
Yooo, thanks for reading once again! Vote and comment, whatever the fuck it is.
