It was midnight we were all gathered around the tomb, Sheila was putting everything in place for the spell while Bonnie read the grimoire to make sure she didn't forget anything. I felt out place, I didn't have anything to do, neither did I knew how to help. I stood back and watched. Damon was talking to Stefan, after a few minutes he approached me, and sat next to me.
"You seem bored, why don't you go home?" he asked.
"Go home?" I huffed, "No way. My friends and mother are opening a tomb full of vampires, I'm staying."
"Were friends?" He asked, curiosity crept into his eyes, but he hid it with a smirk. I just sighed and looked away. Were we friends? He tried to kill me, and was a messed up guy. But I didn't hate him, on the contrary, he can be nice. I felt a headache coming, every time I thought about him, I would only confuse myself more.
"Well, your friends are vampires." He said after a while, "And witches. Also, your mother is a hunter, one of the good ones. There's nothing to worry about."
"Yeah, but it's hard not to." I said "What are you doing after this?"
"It's been awhile since she's trapped there, so as soon as she recovers. I'm leaving this town." He was talking about Katherine again, somehow, I hated it when he did.
"We're ready." Sheila said and Damon went back to them. I stayed in my place, and saw everything unfold. Bonnie and her grandmother hold hands and started chanting, soon enough, the flames of torches started rising and going crazy. A minute after, everything stopped. They nodded to Stefan and Damon who opened the tomb. Mom grabbed a machete and got inside, followed by Damon who carried a blood bag.
I went over to Sheila,. "So what's the plan?" I asked worried, "I think he is going to notice when Mom starts killing all those vampires."
"I doubt he is going to care, Em." Stefan said, "He just wants Katherine."
"But we know better." I fought back, "what happens then?"
"Your mom can fight him, she's strong." Sheila said trying to be comforting, "She has fought Vampires before."
Half an hour later, Mom came out with a guy who looked awful, with no color on his skin. It seemed like she was carrying out a dead body. I looked away as she put him inside the trunk of the car, I would never get used to this side of my mother. "That's the last one?" Sheila asked and my mom nodded.
"So you knew." Damon said as he came out of the tomb, his eyes filled with anger. "She was never there." He said. He didn't yell, or shout. Still, his voice sounded dangerous, dripping with venom. In a flash he was behind Bonnie, biting her neck. She screamed in pain and Stefan rushed to get him away and helped Bonnie.
He let go of her and walked over to my mother ready to attack "Don't touch her!" I screamed, he turned and looked at me. The expression on his face changed, it was still dark, yet not angry. He wasn't mad, something else passed through his features.
"You knew too, right?" He said. "I did not expect it from you." I stared at the floor unable to look at him, I had betrayed him. "But I did expect them from them" He added and I saw how his factions hardened, he rushed to my mother, but didn't attack her, he pushed her to the side and opened the trunk. She tried to get up and fight him, but in a second he took out the heart of the vampire and threw it next to my mom. "Good luck getting information now."
"Dammit" my mother cursed under her breath, looking at the dead body.
Just as fast, he rushed off.
After everything, Bonnie and Sheila left to their house, Stefan did the same.
"Let's get home already" My mom said. "The babysitter probably will charge extra." She said getting in the car.
I did too, "Mom, uh, can you drop me off on the Boarding House?" I said.
"Honey, I don't think that's a good idea-" she started to say, but I stopped her.
"Bonnie is going home with her grams, we're going home to Alex. But Stefan will be alone, he might have lost his brother because of this stupid plan." I said adding "I'm his friend, I won't let him alone."
"And if Damon shows up?"
"Stefan will be there, he won't hurt me." I said. Hoping she would agree, I also needed space, seeing her drag dead vampires one minute and the next she was talking about babysitters was still something that shocked me.
My mother looked at me for a few moments but sighed in resignation . She took me to a drive-in to get some food, and then drop me off at Stefan's house.
Over there, I put everything in the kitchen table, we ate some food and talked for awhile about nothing in particular, intentionally avoiding the subject. Stefan wasn't into opening up, and I respected that. We talked for an hour to try to distract us from this awful night, and at the end, he asked if I would like to stay for the night.
_____________
It was four o'clock and I couldn't sleep, everything that had gone wrong kept me up. I felt the left side of the bed sink, I turned around, Damon was there with his usual smirk.
"Hey, liar." he said, his breath filled with alcohol.
"Drowning your sorrows?" I asked trying to smile, but seeing he was serious I went quiet again. "My mom shouldn't have done that."
"You didn't have to either."
"What choice did I had? Opening a tomb full of starving vampires for one girl was reckless, Damon."
"You let me believe she was there, you lied to my face, I didn't know you had it in you." He countered slurring his words.
"I know, I'm sorry." I said, and I meant it.
Slowly, he moved closer and closer. Until we were separated by mere centimeters, our faces were so close my breath caught. My heart beating so fast I thought it might jump out my chest, "I should kill you." He said and I felt as he placed his hand on my neck, a few seconds passed, he didn't try to do anything. He only rested his hand there for a while. "But I won't." He sighed moving away, leaving me confused and my heart a mess.
"You won't? why?" I asked confused, not that I had a death wish, but he did have good reasons to do so.
"I guess this makes us even" He said grabbing a bottle of scotch from the nightstand
"How are we even?"
"You didn't let your mother kill me" He said. My eyebrows raised, " ...yeah I heard that."
"Oh." I said, I opened my mouth to say something but I closed it again, I truly didn't know he heard us.
"Why?" He asked taking another sip from the bottle. "Why didn't you let her?
"I didn't want to see you get hurt," I sighed, and grabbed the bottle from him to take a sip. "You suck, and it's really twisted... but you're my friend."
"I am?" His eyebrows shot in surprise smirking.
"Yes, you are." I laughed, "and I'm sorry for being such a crappy friend to you." I said.
"Well, this calls for a celebration," he said and tried to take the bottle.
"Yeah, you had too much for now." I snatched the bottle away. "But there are some french fries in the kitchen," I said as I jumped off to get them. I hurried to the kitchen, took the fries, left the bottle and went back to the guest room. Where Damon had already fallen asleep.
There, seeing him sleep, made me feel like a weight had lifted off my shoulders, and I all that happened that day finally sink in. I felt tired at last. I took a pillow, and went to the couch to sleep.
----------------
AUTHOR'S NOTE: I have two reasons for not killing off Sheila: 1. I always thought Bonnie's grandmother was cool and I felt bad for her when she died. 2. The idea I have for this story might involve her but I'm not sure yet.
Also, I hope you liked this chapter :)
