Villains suck.

They are rude, heartless and are bent up on making our character's life miserable.

Yet...can you imagine a story without them?

What would be the fun in reading or writing a story that didn't involve challenges?

Take the little mermaid. If Ursula wasn't there, she wouldn't have gotten those legs and she wouldn't have met Prince Eric! And then if she had a voice, the little frogs and animals wouldn't have sung that epic, "kiss the girl" song! I mean, come on! That song is what makes the movie!

And yes. I'm a huge fan of Disney movies. Sue me.

What about Star Wars? Darth Vader's backstory was so complex that they needed to make three more movies about him! Just to let us know what the hell happened to him that he turned to the dark side.

And that whole, "I am your father!" when he cuts Luke's hand is so freaking epic. That doesn't mean I'd like him to be my father, but seeing it on the screen, or reading about him, is what kept me captivated with the stories.

One of my favorite villains was Heath Ledger's Joker. Again, there's a dramatic story behind that evil façade. Villains have been hurt, so much, that it led them to be as dark as they are.

If you think about it, villains are more complex to write, than the actual hero. I'm pretty sure they are harder to play, too. They are much more complex. They are who they are because of their past, and you need to be extremely careful with all the details that surround them. Be their appearance, their gestures or what they want to achieve.

They mess with our characters, they play with our feelings and they make us feel bad and do things we would never do.

Oh wait.

They do teach us to be brave. To take risks. To take the plunge.

HUH.

Maybe they aren't that bad, are they?
