I was just about to ask Shelby where she wanted to go first when I was abruptly disrupted by a loud jingling of music. People in smart suits began ushering the crowd backwards. "Please step back ladies, gentlemen boys and girls!" they call, waving their arms in the air. I wait until the people behind us move and then gently pull Shelby's wheelchair back. By this time a huge crowd had gathered, eagerly awaiting to find out what was going on.
We are near the front, there is only one family in front of us. Although Shelby couldn't see; however, hard she tried, swaying from side to side and stretching her head as high as she could. She slouches in her chair in annoyance. I watch her open and close her mouth, in attempt of a sign but no noise comes out. Her eyes fix to the ground and her thin brown eyebrows knit together. Even though I know Shelby hates me drawing attention to her disabilities, I can't stand and watch her like this for another second.
"Excuse me?" I pat the tall gentlemen on the shoulder.
He quickly spins around giving me a fright. I look at Shelby and then look back at him, phrasing what I am going to say in my head. Before I say anything the man read my mind.
"Oh!" he exclaims. "I am so sorry! That was so rude of us, honestly I didn't notice we were blocking her view." he says, immediately looking embarrassed. "Here honey, come in front of us!" he smiles at Shelby.
"Shelby this nice man is saying you can go in front of them so you can see better," I sign to her as the family move aside to give Shelby enough room to maneuver.
Shelby smiles and put four fingers to her chin and moves them outwards whilst looking at the family, gesturing thank you in sign language. Everyone beams back at her and Shelby scoots forward.
Just as she put her brakes on the music got louder, suggesting it was getting closer. Shelby moves her head around swiftly, looking in all directions trying to see what was going on. She can't hear the joyful music, nor can she hear everyone's laughter and cheering as the music grew louder and louder.
Doctors have always told me even though people who are deaf cannot hear; they can hear sound vibrations, which means they can enjoy music in their own way. I wonder if Shelby can feel anything, she doesn't sway side to side like the children beside us who were clearly enjoying the familiar Disney tunes.
Suddenly a gigantic train comes around the corner, it is painted in such bright colours that I couldn't peel my eyes away from it. The speakers situated at the front of the first carriage blast out the well known Disney theme song 'Celebrate A Dream Come True.' Looking up the street I could see hundreds, probably thousands of people gathering on either side of the street to watch the welcoming parade. First comes Donald and Daisy Duck with Goofy, and before long Mickey and Minnie are dancing past us. Everyone screams and waves furiously, as the characters wave and blow kisses to their beloved fans.
Shelby sits with her back straight, her shoulders pushed back with her neck stretched up, trying to get the best possible view that she could. I crouch down beside her, looking at things from her angle. "I hope we see Anna and Elsa!" she signs quickly to me, not taking her eyes away from Alice and The Mad Hatter.
"I hope we see Woody and Buzz Lightyear!" I sign back to her, knowing that she loves Toy Story. She is too busy waving to Peter Pan and putting her thumbs down at Captain Hook that she doesn't pay any attention to what I had said.
The last train carriage comes by and there is Anna and Elsa waving and dancing. Elsa's dress swirls in the slight breeze, and Anna's plaits swing furiously as she waves to all the boys and girls. Shelby looks happier than ever, her smile going from ear to ear, her eyes wide open. She leans forward in her chair to see as much as she can of them before they disappear ahead of us.
Hundreds of characters come dancing behind the parade train, throwing batons in the air and swinging each other around in circles to the rhythm of the music. Snow White skips along with her seven dwarfs following her, "Hi ho hi ho, it's off to work we go!" everyone sings.
"Watch me everybody!" Pinocchio shouted as he begins to dance with Jiminy Cricket. "My wish was to become a real boy, and my wish came true," he shouts. Fitting in his dream into the song. It makes me think about Shelby's dream and wish she could hear the inspiring song. I know it would make her hopeful of her dream.
"I can show you the world, shining, shimmering, splendid."
"It's supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, even though the sound of it is something quite atrocious. If you say it loud enough you'll always sound precocious, supercalifragilisticexpialidocious."
"Hakuna Matata what a wonderful phrase, Hakuna Matata ain't no passing craze. It means no worries for the rest of your days. Its our problem free philosophy, Hakuna Matata."
A remix of the most well-known Disney songs fill my ears. The music just has something about it, I can't describe what it is, but I just can't help to smile broadly.
Before we know it, the parade is over, and we all felt slightly disappointed it had come to an end. It was simply magical how it was all put together. Everyone stands up and walks in different directions quickly, meaning the street clears within a few minutes.
"So Shelby, where do you want to go first?" I smile, wondering which character she would want to see first.
"Let's go on the rides first!" Shelby beams.
My heart split in two as I look at my little girl who happily sits in her wheelchair, excited about going on rollercoasters...
