I stare at the picture with glossy eyes; I can't remember the last time we got a picture taken together, just the two of us. I turn and thank the lady, trying to focus on her sweet face through my blurry eyes. She pats me on the shoulder and tells us to have a lovely day. And I know we are going to. I'll make sure of it.
"Can we get the picture printed and stick it on the fridge?" Shelby signs, her little round face beaming with pride.
"We can do better than that Shel, we can get it printed on a big canvas and put it in the living room!" I sign back, excitement running through my veins.
We walk towards Fantasyland, travelling slowly so we can take in every inch of our surroundings. The tall buildings holding their ground in confidence. People selling big pink sticks of candy floss, the sweet scent filling the air. The bright baby blue sky shone down on us, the orange sun glistening with a cool breeze tickling our skin. I watch Shelby's dress sparkle in the sun as we get closer and closer to the Princess Fairytale Hall.
When we arrive, the queue is rather long, despite it being not long after opening time. Queues nearby aren't half as long, but this is the queue for Elsa and Anna after all.
I had purchased fast pass tickets before coming, I thought we might as well, since I'm not sure we'll be coming back again anytime soon. So Shelby might as well enjoy the day to the max and see all of the characters she has longed to meet. I show the tickets to the attendant standing near the entrance and he waves us in, telling Shelby to enjoy it.
There are only two groups of people in front of us. Shelby wiggles around in her chair to get a first look at the two princesses. They both look very beautiful, their long silk dresses trailing behind them, their hair fastened into plaits exactly how they are in the movie, and their makeup sparkles in the light. They both stand with big gleaming grins, pulling different poses for the photographer.
"Hello princess," Elsa said, walking towards Shelby. "You look just like my friend Cinderella, does she know you have borrowed her dress?" she giggled, putting her dainty gloved hand over her mouth. Her big blue glimmery eyes stared at Shelby, waiting for a response. Shelby stared back, admiring her looks.
"Shelby is deaf; I'm afraid she can't hear you nor will she reply back to you. But this is really a pleasure for her to meet you, thank you," I said to the young woman, gritting my teeth slightly. I never enjoy explaining to someone that my daughter is deaf, saying it aloud made it seem more real.
"She's a real princess mum, look how beautiful she is!" Shelby signs to me. I breathe out a chuckle and shake my head slightly at this wonderful little girl sitting before me. A true heart of gold.
"She said that you are a real princess, and that you are very beautiful," I smile to the lady dressed in all blue.
"How do you say 'you are a princess Shelby' in sign language?" Elsa asks me.
I feel truly touched that she wants to make the effort to communicate herself with Shelby. I stand back a little, so I wasn't in Shelby's view as much. I move my hands slowly, showing Elsa the correct hand movements.
