There are a couple of theories as to how Kirby got his name. One is that he was named after the Kirby vacuum cleaner, since his signature power is inhaling enemies, and another is that he was named after John Kirby, a lawyer who saved Nintendo from a lawsuit from Universal Studios for the resemblance of Donkey Kong to King Kong.
