Ty pulls out a iron axe and starts chopping down a tree. I always thought it was weird how if you cut out the bottom part of the tree, the rest would still stand. He comes back with a crafting bench and a wooden sword.
“For close combat…” Deadlox whispers as he passes me the sword.
“Thanks!” I smile warmly at him, causing him to look away. “So I was thinking…”
“That doesn’t sound safe.” Ty looks back at me and smiles.
“Ha, thanks Ty. Reeaaalllll supportive.” I laugh, sitting down. I lean against a tree, and pat the ground beside me. “I was thinking we should take watch in shifts. Like for half the night I stay up on guard, then you take the second half.”
“That seems safe. I’ll take the first shift.” Deadlox reaches for the sword.
“Uh, no. You made stuff today and didn’t much sleep the other night. It’s bedtime for you.” I state, moving the sword away from him.
“You didn’t even sleep! You need to sleep now to regain your strength!” he shouts, startling me, but I hold my ground.
“Go to bed. I’ll even sing to you if you want… That’s what I didn’t like about our village… No… music.” I say wistfully, staring across the water.
“Nobody was allowed to sing, drum, whistle or anything. Just boring a boring old village with boring old everyday routines. Nothing lively about it.” Ty yawns.
“See. I knew you were tired.” I smile.
“How ‘bout that song?” He smiles.
“Alright.” I smile back as I open my mouth to sing.

I stroke the hair out of Tys face as he closes his eyes and curls up next to me, his head on my lap.

I stop suddenly as a loud snap sounds behind me. I nudge Ty, and grab everything I could hold. He still wasn’t waking up. Quickly, I toss everything into the hole I had been digging to set a trap and throw dirt over it. Picking up Ty, I drag him into the bushes, staring at the burning embers of our fire.
“Bloody kids, stealing our loot and ditching the village! If I catch that stupid teeenager I have to call my son, I’ll skin ‘im!” Deadloxs dad trudges into the campsite and sees the fire. “Still burning. They were ‘ere recently.” he leaves the campsite and passes close to the foliage that Ty and I were hiding in.
I turn towards Deadlox, and see him still curled up in ball. His eyes were closed tightly, and he was whimpering. I lean back in the bushes and put my arm around him. I close my eyes, drifting off to the dark abyss called sleep.
I woke up to dark eyes staring at me. I tear my arm away from Ty, and stare back at the wolf, blinking slowly. Silently, I creep around it to the hole where I stashed everything. Digging out a couple bones, I toss them at the wolf, one at a time, until he seems happy to be around me. I slip a red collar around his neck, to mark him as my pet, and go to wake up Ty.
