Rachel Palmer

The sprinkler turns on. "We need to get out of here!" I yell, looking at Jake, scared. "Let's try this together." We put both of our hands on the door. Our necklaces clink. The door slams open. We run to the front door, soaking wet. The doors are already open.

Mr. Hamilton lays on the sidewalk, a black symbol on his arm. A triangle. "Never liked him anyways." Jake smirks. I laugh. All of a sudden, a beeping sound comes from the building. It gets louder and faster. Beep, beeep, beep, beeeeeeeepppppp. Jake and I start to run, realizing the scene. We were too late. The whole school explodes, Jake and I are thrown onto the street, marked with scratches and bruises. He looks at me, full of concern. A drip of blood runs down the side of his face.

I manage to stand up without my knees buckling. "We need to keep moving." He gets up, but then winces and falls down hard on the asphalt in pain. His ankle has a sprain. I hope. Either that, or it's broken. I grab a piece of wood, break it in half, and tie my socks together to make a make-shift cast.

Jake tries to walk on it, but his expression already explains to me that he's in no shape for walking. I let him lean on me. Out necklaces clink together again. Jake stands up in his perfect size, walking fine.

"What the..." I'm obviously baffled. In the distance, we hear a eera-ee sound. "Come on!" Jake says. We run up to the street until we get to the downtown area of our city.

Everyone was dead.

People lay in cars and outside shops with the same triangle on their arm. The aliens must have infected them. As we come upon the new Coldstone Creamery, I know I have to cry. My mother owns the store.

And she's laying right in front of it.

Normally, I don't like to cry I'm front of people, but I didn't care. I didn't care about the disciplinary punishment, I wasn't even mad anymore. All I cared about was my mom, my best friend, my one only family I knew was dead.

Gone.

Forever.

I break down sobbing on the curb, Jake hovering over me. He sits down beside me, and rubs my back in circles.

"Dude, I know how sad this—"

"No! You don't know! All you do is walk around campus, looking desperate for a girl, and trying to make everyone think your cool. You know, I'm pretty sure your parents bought your friends because all them are always rich like you! So no-"

"I've have been silent for the past two times you have yelled at me for being a rich kid!" I stare at Jake at him for his sudden burst of anger. But nevertheless, he continued. "I didn't choose to have this life! I didn't choose to have a bratty little sister,  stuck up parents! I didn't choose any of this! I wouldn't even be wanting to surviving with you if you were the last person on Earth! Oh wait, I think you are."

My face was filled with mixed with so many emotions. Regret, anger, sadness. The most one: hurt. A tear trickled down on my cheek. Jake notices this and he realizes his mistake. I look down at the road. His thumb grazes my face as he wipes it away. "Hey, Rach. I didn't mean it like that. I was just... I'm sorry."

"Save it." I tell him. We both get up and look behind us. Jake says, "There is something back there that I don't want to see. And I'm pretty sure it doesn't want to see us." I chuckle. We head towards the infamous Crane Park.

Leaf in Leafside also means paper, not the actual leaf. So origami, paiper-mâché, and other paper-related art takes places here. That's why the park is called Crane Park, ask because it has a paper crane in smack-dab in the middle of it, standing 50 feet tall. Our city is pretty fun. They like to include everyone, especially the little kids. Every 3rd Saturday of April, we have a sailboat race and a paper airplane flight test at Leaf's Lake.

Our city is named after its founder Charles Leaf. While he made plans for the city blueprint, he wasn't paying attention that he was at Close Cliff, the only cliff in Leafside and yes, he fell off and died. His son, John Leaf, had to help him with the new city. More like country. But you get what I mean.

As we walk inside the park, a strange figure is cropped into the field. Oh, right. The trident crop circle. Surprisingly, it's the biggest one in Leafside. News reporters say that the aliens are trying to find something. A key or lost baby or something?!! Reporters have no clue whatsoever.

We keep walking. The pathway split into three.

"Let's go... this way." We both point the opposite way. "Ok, before we get into another argu-"I give him a cold glare before he continues his sentence-" I'll go left, and you go right."

I stop in my tracks and give him my what the heck look. "That's how every person in a horror movie dies!"

Jake returns it with a raised eyebrow. "And this is horror movie?"

"Yes!"

"Ok, ok. I'll come with you."

He steers me to the right and heads my way. For a second, I saw a glimpse of a black misty figure saying, Come with me...

"Did you see that?" I asked Jake.

"See what?"

Jake Landers can not see me. Only you can.

Two other misty figures appeared from a bush.

We'll keep you safe. All you have to do is let go.

Let go.

It was like they were controlling me. I collapse to the ground, flat. That last thing I hear is "Rachel!" and I black out.
