Chapter Thirteen

The next morning nothing really happens, but just after lunch there's some commotion. I'm sitting in the living room after another training session with Alicia, although it's no challenge at all to break into her mind. The door is ajar and I can see that people are rushing through the hallway. Curiosity takes over and I quickly move to the door to find out what's going on.

'What's going on?' I ask a woman who's passing. She looks at me incredulously, as if it's something I should already know.

'We're under attack.' She says and before I can ask her more about it, she's already moved on. Her words alarm me. This has to be Matt. Who else would attack my father? But it doesn't make sense. Why would he do that? If someone gets caught and my father breaks into his mind, my cover is blown. I shake my head. What is this mess? I can't stay here. I need to keep the damage as minimal as possible. I quickly exit the room and move in the opposite direction. Some people look at me with an annoyed expression on their faces, since I'm blocking their way to safety and others look at me as if I'm crazy.

'What are you doing?' It's Barbara's father, Mason. 'Shelter is this way.' He points in the direction of the more secured part of the building, where we are supposed to hide in cases like this. There we are safe and no one will be able to either abduct or kill us.

'I need to get something.' I say as I move past him and quickly move on before he can ask me more questions or drag me to the safe rooms. Where are they where are they where where where the question is circling around in my head, just like why why why. How could this happen? This is the stupidest thing Matt has ever done. Has he gone insane? Does he want to kill me? I'm frantically running around the building, which is mostly empty, since everyone is either on the other side of the building or they are supposed to fight the attackers. Have they already entered? Who exactly are here? Has my father already captured someone? I certainly don't hope so. Think straight, Zoë. Think straight. Okay, okay. Where are the weak spots? Nowhere. Wrong, of course there is a weak spot. One I used all those years ago. That's where I need to go. Within minutes I'm in the abandoned garage. Most people don't even know it exists and officially I don't know about it either, but that's not important right now. I run to one of the broken windows and peek outside. There's someone there, I can make out a silhouette. The person turns around and looks me right in the face. It's a scouter from Matt, I recognise him. He sees me too and quickly runs over to me.

'Zoë!' He says. 'Thank God that I found you.' What is he talking about?

'What is this?' I hiss. He offers his hand to help me through the window, but I stay where I am. His expression becomes puzzled when he realises that I'm not taking his help.

'We're here to save you.' He says. 'We heard that you were taken, so we got some guys together and went out.' O God no. 'We tried to go out weeks ago to go and get Sara and Zac but we were found out. Now we got a second chance. Do you know where they are? Zac and Sara, I mean.' He continues.

'Get out.' I say instead of answering. 'How many of you are here? You need to get away and don't come back, you understand?' Matt doesn't know they are here. They are out on their own, trying to take matters into their own hands.

'But we are here for you, all three of you.' The scouter protests.

'I know.' I say impatiently. 'And I'm telling you to leave. Matt sent me here.' This is enough explanation.

'No way.' He sounds incredulous, but I know he believes me. 'That's not true. Matt wouldn't send you.'

'Well, he did. Now, go get your friends and get out. If you don't, we're all dead.'
