Preparing for gala events and parties with the upper crust wasn’t one of Tony Smith’s joys. The entire headache of running his father’s businesses was something he’d much rather do without. However, fate had placed him in this situation and he had to handle it professionally. Tony contemplated all this as he dressed himself. He was preparing to attend one of those events he hated. He was holding a banquet for Albert Wuhl. Wuhl had a collection of historic jewels featuring a jeweled bracelet called the “Wraith”and a scroll dating back centuries. The scroll and “Wraith” alone was said to be worth a fortune. It was also said that over time, many have died and killed to possess the “Wraith.”
“Are you about ready sir?” Jeffrey called out to Tony.
“Yeah,” Tony whined, “Just have to grab my coat.”
“The gates men brought this letter up sir,” Jeffrey handed the letter to Tony.
Tony took the letter and found a bird insignia embossed on it. The letter had no name on it, just the bird insignia. He opened it to find a paw mark where the signature should be. He clenched the letter and grimaced.
“What’s wrong sir?” Jeffrey pondered.
“It’s the Minx,” Tony muttered, “Just her way of letting me know she’s in town.”
“My dear,” Jeffrey gasped.
“I don’t have time to go over that now though, I’ve got to get to the hall.”
Tony left for Benjamin Hall, the biggest gallery in Metro City, that he named after his father. It housed many of Metro’s art showings and recitals of various types. Tonight, Albert Wuhl, an eccentric art collector will unveil one of the most mysterious artifacts none to man, “the Wraith and Scroll”. The combination package has been around for centuries and many had died trying to obtain the two artifacts. No one has ever been able to obtain the artifacts until now. Through constant searching and a lot of funds, Wuhl had recovered the artifacts. He is not the only person who has been seeking the artifact in Metro City, however.
Tony arrived at Benjamin Hall early to make sure everything would be in order. He met the gallery director, Byron Thomas in front of the “Wraith and Scroll” exhibit.
“So what do you think Mr. Smith?” Byron asked.
“I don’t like it,” Tony started, “Bringing such a mysterious artifact for a public showing. It just doesn’t seem right to me.”
“Must you always be so pessimistic Mr. Smith,” Byron taunted.
“I’m sorry Byron,” Tony smiled, “Leave it to Albert to show off his wears however.”
The two of sat for a little longer staring at the exhibit. Tony thought to himself the “Wraith” was a work of art. A jeweled bracelet designed like no other. The settings of the three stones were wondrous. No one has found any stone as pure as the jewels in the “Wraith”. The story behind the “Wraith and Scroll”, were what bothered Tony however. If the stories were true about the “Wraith and Scroll” they would make whoever possessed them the most powerful person in the world. The stories seemed unbelievable but he had seen stranger things happen.
“So do you believe the stories Mr. Smith?” Byron finally broke the silence.
“I don’t put much stock into fables Byron,” Tony returned, “but we better get ready. Our guests will be here soon.”
