"So what are we doing here again?" He instantly grinned. His eyes twinkled mischievously. I don't like that look on him, I decided.

"I said I was going to make some phone calls home, didn't I?"

Oh god, I thought, my eyes narrowed in suspicion. Just what is he planning? As if he heard the thought, he looked up and smirked. It was a look far too unprofessional to belong to the authoritative figure he was.

Inspecting the mischievous look, I suddenly wondered how I couldn't tell Carter was related to the man. When they wore the right expressions, they looked like carbon copies of each other. Of course, one copy was printed out much earlier.

Luc grabbed a bunch of papers, shuffling them together. A crisp rustle filled the air as the sheets slid against each other. Finally, the room fell quiet once more. "Found it," he muttered under his breath. His eyes glittered as a sinister delight poured into his face. He looked back at me, then to the boys. "Get out and stay out," he said, sobering up. "Only for a few minutes, though," he added, almost as an afterthought.

Even though he sounded serious, there was something about his look that let me know he was about to laugh. However, I never got to hear him break because a hand wrapped itself around my forearm and swiftly tugged me out of the room.

The hand around my arm fell away. My eyes trailed up the arm belonging to whoever it was, finally stopping on his olive-colored eyes. For a fraction of a second I was caught off guard. I stopped myself from widening my eyes, just in time. Instead, I let them narrow. "What the hell was that for?" I asked sharply as soon as the wooden door clicked shut.

Ryder stayed silent for a moment, eyes darkening. Then, he spoke. "When someone like him asks you to do something, you do it." His voice was a paradox all on it's own, soft spoken yet sharp. I couldn't quite comprehend his words at first but when I did, three words stuck like pesky burrs onto the cotton of my mind.

Someone like him?

I didn't have a clue of what it was supposed to mean. I looked to Carter who smiled through gritted teeth. He gave Ryder a forceful look. Don't give us away, it seemed to say. Nick's eyes met mine briefly before I looked down.

Although I was confused, I let it go. I don't even know them properly yet. I have no reason to pry. I shook my head at myself and sat directly in front of the door. What was Luc up to?

I placed my ear close to the key hole, catching bits and pieces of conversation. "-cey... raised by a... she needs to... liar and... problems with... bullying... her record." Words and incoherent mumbles sounded behind the door, jumbled into a puzzle with multiple missing pieces. "Mmhm... nice day... -oodbye." When I heard a beep, I scooted away from the door.
