~Years Ago~
Who would've thought Lucifer was capable of crying.
Emotions weren't something he felt often, but at that moment, he couldn't help but feel a deep aching sadness, pulling down on him like a crushing weight.
Shoulders shook with silent heaves, cold tears slithered down his cheeks, clear snakes.
The gentle rapping of knuckles on the door made him pause. He trailed his eyes upward from the ground, eyes hardened, and a scowl marring his face.
A slow creak echoed in the room only seconds later, along with a sliver of orange light.
"What is it?" Lucifer asked, emotionless. His voice sounded almost as silky as usual. However, if you knew it was there, if you just listened, you'd hear the rasp interlaced. But no one ever did. Who in hell would?
"Daddy?" A little boys voice sounded. Lucifer exhaled in relief and untensed his muscles. It was just his son.
"What are you doing here Cerbeius?" His voice came out sharper than he meant it to.
Soft, padded, footsteps made their way closer, and closer, and closer. Big, bright, grey-brown eyes peered up at him.
"What happened? Where is she?" the little boy asked, his nose rosy in the freezing room. Shadows framed his delicate, almost-chubby face.
Lucifer scowled at him. "Go away, Carter."
The boy gasped, taking a step back. His bottom lip trembled and his eyes glistened. His father never called him that, except for in the human world. Cerbeius was Lucifer's son. Carter was Luc's.
Lucifer cursed at himself as four-year-old Cerbeius's eyes couldn't hold the tears back any longer. It was suddenly harder for the kid to see his fathers face in the dim lighting.
"I'm not Carter!" Cerbeius lashed out, face twisted into a sneer. It looked ridiculous on him, the boy was one of the happiest people in the god-forsaken place.
Lucifer turned away, glaring at the ground, his lips down-turned. Cerbeius just barely caught a glimpse of the sadness in his father's eyes before they disappeared.
Lucifer's eyes held nothing in them. Not anymore. "I'm not Carter," he said again, softly.
Lucifer slowly turned back around with a sigh. He cupped his son's face. He opened his mouth to say something but stopped short.
I'm sorry.
Instead, he let go and took a step back. "Unfortunately, you don't have much of a choice. We're going to the human world today. I have some business to take care of." And then he turned away, dismissing his son with the flick of his hand.
Cerbeius silently left the room, regretting stepping foot in there in the first place. He had a bad feeling about whatever was going to happen.
Where was she?

A/N: though this says RW (rewritten) in the chapter name, it is actually a first draft. Originally it was in a separate book that was 'Mask Rewritten' before I decided to merge these; the original with the new version (especially since there were no major changes to the plot yet).
