I tightened my grip around my towel as my brain started to process it was only a joke, “You asshole.” I pant still trying to slow down my heart rate. “Help me up or I’m kicking you out,” I say with a very fake snarl on my face.
“Fine, fine can’t take a joke…” Eric grins extending his hand for me, I hold it tight as he lifts me from the ground immediately I get an electric charge shooting through my arm a charge he can’t feel.
“I’m sorry I thought a joke was supposed to be oh what’s the word I’m looking for…FUNNY?” I say narrowing my eyes at him,
“If you saw the look on your face you’d understand it was like,” He made his best impression of me, while laughing holding his side. I couldn’t help but smirk as I tried to hold back my laughter,
“It’s not funny!” I whine, as I punch him playfully in the shoulder.
“It was almost as funny as that time at Jenny’s Birthday when you-“ Eric started laughing harder than before, my eyes go wide and my face flushes red at the memory. He was interrupted by his cellphone ringing thank god. Beethoven’s 5th symphony blares from his cell letting us know it’s his mother calling, “Yes mom?” he asks in an annoyed tone.
I examine his body as he talks on the phone; everything seems different now that I know the truth. I used to think every little movement he made was him giving me a hint he was in love with me, now I don’t see that at all. I simply see a guy who is annoyed with his overprotective mother; I think back before and try to remember what on earth I took as a hint. “I’m so stupid…” I mumble, Eric mouths what? In return, I shake my head and he starts making motions of him dying in different ways cause of how boring she was. I laugh quietly trying not to get him in trouble he quickly stops.
“No, I’m not making fun of you mom. Geez how old do you think I am 7?” He asks holding back a chuckle, his facial expression changes suddenly. “I have to go, love you, bye.” He says quickly hanging up and throwing his phone on the couch a few feet away.
“What was that about?” I ask, as I jump up to sit on the counter. “Ow!” I say when my head hit the cabinets behind me.
“Nothing.” He says plainly shifting his eyes to the muted TV,
“Oh best friend I know when something is wrong so spill the beans before I get literal beans and throw them on you!” I say my voice rising with each word, but of course it was for his own good.
“Nothing, she just annoys me.” He stares down at the ground trying to wipe a smear off the floor with his sneaker.
“What did she do this time? Ask if you were wearing clean undies?” I ask with a playful wink, he gives a weak smile.
“Actually at one point yeah but that isn’t- ugh never mind.” He says throwing his hands up, I open the cabinet beside me and grab a can of beans giving him a stern look. “Fine! She started to ask when I was going to get married and have kids, satisfied?” he asks with an annoyed tone, running and jumping onto my couch in the living room so gracefully.
I sat on the counter speechless; I didn’t realize it was actually something serious. “You could get a cover up wife, well girlfriend first.” I mumble,
“Right because all women are just dying to be cover up wives, get real Mia where would I find a girl willing to be my cover up?” He asks running his hand through his thick hair with a sigh,
“Well…I’d do it!” I say excited jumping off the counter and dashing for the couch landing on top of his chest.
“You, my girlfriend?” He asks then bursts into laughter my smile quickly faded, “No one in their right mind would believe that!” He laughs harder as though him being with me is just so damn hilarious.
“And why not?” I ask giving him a punch in the chest; he let out a huff of air when my fist hit his chest.
“Geez, when did you become so violent?” He asks while rubbing his chest, “And strong…” he adds as he furrowed his brow.
“I’m not violent…and okay I’m sorry for hitting you I guess I don’t know my own strength. Just let me know when you suddenly became too good for me.” The words come out in a whisper, as I look away to the ground tears rushing to my throat burning me from the inside I use all my strength to hold them back.
“Mia that wasn’t what I was saying at all…” I take a deep breath and look into his eyes for a split second before turning back to the ground. All hints of joking have fled his eyes only sincerity left, “We have been best friends for years, the fact that we never turned into anything ‘til now is a little unbelievable if we were gonna fall for each other it would have happened years ago.” He says in a low reassuring voice, I gave a faint nod not even bothering to look at him. “Will you look at me? Please?” There was a long pause; we both let out a sigh as time passes and we were silent I feel his heart beat in his chest and I count them. 1,2,3,4…his heart beat a slow normal rate, while mine races from sitting on his chest in this couple like manor. “I don’t understand why this upset you so much…” He trails off looking at my face,
“I’m going to get dressed.” I say plainly getting off his chest gripping my towel so it doesn’t fall.
