Seth rolls down the
driver's side window of his car
on Tuesday night,
looking rather perplexed.
“Who's this?”
he asks, motioning
past me to where Euni
stands on the sidewalk,
trying to look inconspicuous.
“If she's here to see you off,
she can go back in now.”“I'm along for the ride,”
my sister speaks up,
grinning that grin of hers
that means that she's actually
sort of annoyed on the inside.
“Open up, buddy -
you've got two dates tonight.”“You're kidding,”
Seth breathes, looking concerned.
“Matty, tell me
that she's kidding.
I'm not paying for
both of you.”“My mom said that
the only way I could go
is if she comes along,”
I say, pulling open
the passenger door and
sliding into the seat.
The smooth leather is
familiar to me from
the last time I sat on it.
“So we have
a chaperone for the night.
Lucky us.”“Can we just
pull away and leave her here?”
Seth asks, peering back
out at Eunice, who
is standing by the back door,
pulling at the handle
with no success.
Seth must have
left it locked.
“She's going to
break my car at this rate,”
he points out.“Sadly, no -
my mom would kill me
if she knew we ditched her.”“How sad.”
Seth flicks a button
on his door, and
the back unlocks at last.
Euni nearly falls over
as the door suddenly
opens before her.
“I'm magic,”
she says as she
slides into her seat.
“Did you see that?
Definitely magic.”“Do I know you?”
Seth wonders aloud.
“I don't think I do.”“She's my sister,”
I hurriedly introduce,
“Eunice.”“Oh,”
Seth says suddenly,
as if he's just had
an epiphany.
“You’re the one who
yelled out the door at us
when we came to pick Matty up
for the double date.”Of course that's
what he ends up
remembering her for.
I'm surprised he's never
seen her before, being as
they're in the same grade and all.
But Euni just beams
at the reference.
“One and the same,”
she assures him.
“I heard that you guys
had a lot of fun that night.”Seth makes a face
that I can't help but
smile at.
“Yeah,”
he mutters
unconvincingly.
“Loads.”We ride in silence
the rest of the way to
the pizza place.
It looks just the same
as I remember it -
though one of the letters
in the neon sign above the door
is now burnt out.
Where it once said
'Toner’s Pizza,’
tonight it's missing the T,
I notice.Eunice notices, too.
“That's nice,”
she sniggers as we
all jump out of Seth's car.
“I wonder what the
first letter was?”“Shut up,”
Seth groans in her direction,
rolling his eyes.
To me, he says,
“Why is she here, again?
I'm not buying her pizza,
even if she is
supposedly chaperoning us.”“Don't worry,”
I quickly assure him,
“you don't have to.
Euni won't even be
sitting with us -
isn't that right?”
I add loudly enough
for her to hear me.
I know how little
she wants to be here, anyway,
so I'm sure she'll have no problem
agreeing to our demands. And sure enough,
she just nods.
“You can pay for me
if you really want to, though,”
she prods,
flashing him a winning smile.
“As your date's sister,
I'd really appreciate it.”Seth's expression brooks
no argument as he
responds with a quick,
“No.
I'm definitely not
paying for the
date crasher.”So Euni finds her own table
within earshot of our own
and settles down to
stare at her menu and
pretend that she's not eavesdropping.
Once she's pulled out her phone
and seems firmly invested in
scrolling through her
social media feeds,
I let out the sigh that
I'd been holding back.
“We need to
get rid of her,”
I confide in Seth.
“She'll probably end up
embarrassing us if
we're not careful.
She's really good at that.”“So you want to
be alone with me?”
Seth laughs,
raising an eyebrow.
Immediately, I flush
in embarrassment.
“Is that how it is?”“That's not what
I meant,”
I mumble, trying in vain
to cool my flaming cheeks.
“It's just weird having
your sister peering
over your shoulder
on a date, of all things.”“I was just kidding,”
he laughs.
“I feel the same -
though I'm glad that I'm
not related to her.”
His teasing at Euni's expense
somehow relaxes me
just a little, and
I can't help but laugh
along with him.
I’ve never been on
a date before, but I
can’t help but think that
this probably isn’t the worst
first date I could go on.From her table, my sister
looks up and squints at us,
as if trying to determine
what the joke is.
Little does she know
that she is it.
Poor Eunice.
I hope for her sake,
as well as our own,
that we can get away
from her sooner
rather than later.×
Alright, here we go. Part one of Matty and Seth's first date, ft. Eunice. I just finished writing the last part of it about an hour ago and I just love it. I'm hoping you guys do, too. Probably my favorite part if this story to write so far.
If you guys liked this chapter, I'd love if you would vote and leave me some feedback! It would be very much appreciated <3
Also, I forgot to say this sooner, but thank you guys so much for over 1k reads!! It's crazy that this story has gotten so much support in such a short time. I think it's gotten reads faster than even Misalignment did at this point. Crazy. Everyone's dedication means a ton to me, okay? Cx
