"You won't marry Declan, I won't marry Moira."
"You won't marry Declan, I won't marry Moira."
"You won't marry Declan, I won't marry Moira."-
The words spun round in Charity's head like the earth spins around the sun and the 4th shot of vodka she'd just downed was only spinning them faster. She slammed the glass down on the kitchen table hoping it'd slam the sound of Cain's ultimatum out of her head but, somehow, it was like she could always hear him. She eventually gave up and slumped onto the couch, hoping sleep would at least shut him up for a few hours.
-
Cain's pacing up and down the living room of the Dingle house at 3 in the morning. He knows somethings not right but he can't place it, there's a feeling... The feeling he always has in the pit of his stomach that somethings wrong, that makes him want to drop everything and run to a certain blonde.
"Not this time." He tells himself, and makes his way over to the couch, hoping sleep would at least settle it down for a few hours.-
"Mum!"
"Mum!" Debbie's voice is probably echoing through half the village at this point.
"Granny!" Sarah shrieked and if that hadn't woken Charity up, nothing would.
"That's quite enough of that Granny talk, thank you very much, Sarah." She slowly sat up, holding her head.
"Do you like my dress, Granny?!" Sarah exclaimed, twirling round the living room. Charity had almost forgotten today was her wedding day considering everyone else's day was revolving around Cain and Moira's day.
"I love it, little princess! You look gorgeous!" She managed to choke out the words without sounding too disappointed. She looked up at her Daughter, who looked less than impressed at the sight of her mother on her couch in the clothes from the day before - mascara round her eyes. Not like she'd had anywhere else to go, she couldn't stay at home farm, the last thing she needed was any more bad luck from Declan seeing her before the wedding.
"Suppose I better get ready then, eh?"-
Cain woke up with his phone in his hand, he squinted, adjusting to the light. Charity's name was on the screen and a jolt of panic rushed through him as he checked his texts and call logs, and then the sigh of relief when he hadn't done anything he probably wouldn't regret.
He got up and walked over to the stairs where his suit was hanging in a bag.
"How are you not dressed yet?! We have to leave in 2 hours!" Belle flounced downstairs, as though she wasn't wearing 6 inch heels.
"Alright, Belle. D'you have to shout like that, eh?" Cain scratched his head and picked up his suit bag and headed upstairs to change.
"I'm not shouting but the case of lager you drank last night probably isn't helping that headache!!" Belle shouted, running upstairs after him so her voice was in his ear.
"Get off!"-
"This doesn't feel right." Charity could only wish that wasn't just a thought in her head. She'd never admit it but all she wanted right now was someone to scream at and tell how wrong this all feels and you'd only need one guess as to who was going through her mind.
Her entire family was going to his wedding - she scoffed out loud at the thought of it. She was in Debbie's house, alone now as they'd gone to the Dingles' to see Cain.
She looked at her dress in the mirror and touched up her make-up before leaving to go to her 'wedding'.
None of it felt right.-
Everyone piled into the venue of Cain and Moira's wedding, waiting for them to turn up.
Cain's standing outside flipping through his phone, pausing everytime he came to Charity's name in his contacts.
"Why am I doing this?" He thought to himself, but couldn't decide whether he meant the phone or this wedding.
"You alright?" Cain turned round, startled at Zak's deep voice.
"Yeah... Just got a weird feeling. Like, in the pit of my stomach."
"That's love, son. That's how you know it's right." Zak's advice made perfect sense to Cain, but probably not in the way it was intended.
"Right, you. You ready?" Belle asked, leading him into the hall.
"As I'll ever be, I suppose." He sighed and put his phone in his pocket, it buzzed to confirm the sending of a text message.
"Who could you possibly be texting 5 minutes before you're about to get married?" His sister questioned, no doubt already knowing the answer.
"Uh... No one. Just, um. Im just making sure that... Moira's alright - Look, Belle. I'm supposed to be down there now. See ya later." He stuttered and mumbled before practically running down the aisle.-
Charity stepped onto the aisle as the music started playing. Even though she knew it, she couldn't help but feel disappointed. She wasn't expecting any of her family to be there but knowing her daughter and granddaughter all done up in her beautiful dress, were at his wedding and not her's was giving her a feeling she couldn't describe. Hate, love and longing. All at once. She made her way down the aisle to a room containing virtual strangers til' she was facing Declan.
-
"I, Cain Dingle, take thee Charit-" Shit. He could see the colour drain from Moira's face and the atmosphere in the room drop. Fuck.
"Moira." He tried to correct himself.
"Did he just-"
"Shhhh!"
He cleared his throat. "Take thee, Moira- No. Actually, Moira. I'm so sorry."
"Cain?" Moira yelled after him, he was already halfway up the aisle and making his way out.
"What? Cain!" She screamed this time but by now, Cain was probably halfway across the village"-
"I, Declan Macey. Take thee, Charity Tate, to be my lawfully wedded wife."
Charity felt her phone buzz in her bra. It was like a jolt of electricity running through her when she felt it buzz three times instead of twice, because that's her tone for Cain. She sets his different specifically so she can ignore it, but right now, at this moment in time and for any moments onwards, she can't imagine ignoring that sound ever again. It was the most important sound in the world.
"Uhh... Sorry. I have to take this." Her blonde hair flowing behind her as she sprinted her way up the aisle.
"Charity? Charity, seriously?! You're stopping our wedding to answer a text?!" Declan called after her but she was already gone.-
As soon as she was out of the hall she ripped her phone out of her dress.
"You can feel it too." She read and almost burst out crying there and then. All she knew was that she had to run.
Both of them felt like they'd been running for years, in a way, they had been. Constantly, to and from other people, but somehow always ending up right infront of each other, as they were now.
"Cain!" Charity jumped on him, wrapping her arms around his neck.
"Christ, love. You've been putting it on." He smirked, setting her down.
"Shut up, you idiot. I've just sprinted halfway across the village for you, I'm not that unfit." She rolled her eyes and Cain had never been so bloody happy to see that annoyed expression on her face.
"No one came to my wedding, Cain." She whispered.
"Not even my daughter."
"Yeah, cause she's at mine. Now, come on. You silly mare, everyone's waiting." He took her hand and started leading her to where everyone else was.
"Cain, no!" She dropped his hand.
"Charity. You're not doing this to me again. I've just ran out of my wedding. You've just left yours. We're standing in the middle of the bloody village with two options. Either this was all for nothing and we're standing here like complete idiots having ruined both our wedding days to stand here and lose each other as well as everyone else, again. Or we can go right now, and we can get married. Be together. Like it should be" Cain absolutely hated how charity could bring out this side of him, the vulnerable, 'would beg for love' side. But she does, and they're here and he'll be damned if they're going to throw everything away again.
"No, Cain. That's not what I meant! It's just... Why can't we go somewhere, just us? I love you, Cain and I need us to be together, more than anything, but not like this. Not in the same place on the same day that you were supposed to marry someone else. I want it to be just us. Like it's always meant to be. Me and you, babe." She reaches out for his hand again, he takes it and pulls her into a kiss.
"You're unbelievable, Charity Dingle." He smirks as he pulls his car keys from his pocket and unlocks it. They break hands only to get in the car and drive away.
