A Warped Reality *ON HOLD*

Chapter 14

"Wait what? Hold on let me get this straight. Alexia is your twin," Lily says pointing at Devon to which the latter just nods. "And she supposedly died before she turns up who knows how long later to finally say that she's not dead and wants to join an investigation she knows nothing about?"

Devon and Alexia just nod in response

I bite my tongue to avoid laughing as Lily's looks between the twins.

"Um.....well," Lily trails off looking confused. I can tell she's having a hard time believing everything.

I can see why, I mean a girl just comes back that claims to be Devon's twin. That's kinda sketchy.

"Okay let's get to work then!" Ash suddenly says.

I watch Lily glare at him, to which he just smirks.

I hang back letting everyone go first, watching Lily say down thing to Devon and Devon giving a kind of annoyed response. After Devon's done talking she walks over to Alexia, loops arms with her an walk out of the door.

I exchange a look with Lily before following her out of the door.

"Where are you guys going?" Deborah asks meeting us outside, her hands filled with groceries.

"We are on our way to the demons next victim," lily responds.

Deborah snaps her fingers and her groceries disappear. I'm slightly taken aback before I remember that Deborah has extremely strong magic.

"Let's go," Deborah announces nearly excitedly.

I jog to catch up to ash and pull on his arm to get his attention.

"You and Lily act like an old married couple sometimes," I mutter before running ahead of him.

I hear him sigh before following me.
We all clamber into the car, before slamming the doors shut and heading to our destination.

"There is no way in hell I am knocking on that door," Alexia says as we continue to argue about who's going to knock on the door. "I nominate Devon. She can die first."

"I wish you stayed dead," Devon mutters.

I snicker at their bickering while Lily rolls her eyes.

"I can't," I say smiling sweetly. "After all if they see me first they're gonna be like, oh jeez teenage girl gotta blast."

Lily groans and hits her head on Ash's shoulder.

"I'll do it if you're all going to be pussy's about its," she grumbles. "Plus I have a badge so it'll seem more professional."

As we pull up to our destination, we all climb out of the car and approach the door.

Lily knocks once to know avail. She knocks again, louder this time, and a mother answers the door looking to be around 34. She looks at us confused, before a 12 year old comes running to peek behind her mother. The girl has curly hair hanging in her face and blue eyes staring at us in curiosity.

"Madison go back inside sweetheart, I just need to talk to-" she was cut off by a dark shadow behind her and the door slams. We hear a body thump to the ground and the sound of the young girls screams. We hear footsteps and another door slam as we all try frantically to open the door. Suddenly a blood curdling scream pierces the silence of the night and the door slowly swings open.

Lily pushes it further open and we all slowly walk through the open door. I put my hand on the knife they forced me to thing in case something happened, feeling under protected.

On the floor lays the mother, a bleeding bruise on her forehead. Devon and Alexia immediately kneel down next to her caring for her wounds as best as they can.

I follow Ash and Lily up the stairs and into the hallway.

I glance at some of the photos on the wall. They seemed to be a really happy family and Madison was a really adorable kid.

I see lily examining the photos as well and looking at the ones that are broken on the floor and frowning.

We approach a broken door and lily gently pushes is back and we all walk in.

The inside is a total mess. The clothes and blankets strewn everywhere and the furniture broken.

We check in a few places she could've been but soon it was unavoidable.

Madison is gone.

As I stand there thinking the undeniable thought I feel and overwhelming sense of failure. One kid could be dead because we weren't fast enough. We where so close but I guess the demon is faster.

I turn around watching Lily collapsing to her knees on her ground and Ash wrapping his arms around her. She hands him a letter and I watch his eyes scan it before filling with anger.

"Son of a bitch!" He curses.

He throws it across the room and I scramble to pick it up and read it.

You were too late, better luck next time. I'll be sure to enjoy the first one to escape through your open hands. Guess you guys are not as good as you think.

It wasn't signed but I already knew who it was from.

Suddenly Devon and Alexia walk in and I hand them the note. They both read it their faces falling after they read it.

We where so close.

But not close enough.
