"I thought you were the smart guy! What were you thinking?"
At Metias's hushed rebuke, I just grin. I wasn't thinking of anything smart - that was the point. All I wanted was a small revenge and the feeling of accomplishment.
"They know it was you."
That catches me off guard. "How?"
Metias seems to be taken aback by my reaction. He frowns a little. "Why wouldn't they?" he asks me back.
Why would they? I was well disguised, and hidden. They couldn't have possibly seen me. Did I leave anything behind that might tip off my identity? No. I didn't have anything with me. They don't have the evidence...
My thoughts reach the point where I finally come to the realization. They don't have to have the evidence to know it was me. The Patriots and I are the only ones who mess with the Republic around this area, and the Patriots always leave their mark.
Rule out the Patriots from the two options: only I, Day, remains.
A good soldier as he is, Metias analyzes my face, and knows what I am thinking. He lets out a small smile. "Figured it out, kid?"
I can't do anything but nod. I did figure it out. They don't need to have an evidence to know it was me: they only need to look at the style of the work.
"The Republic is hunting for you," he says.
I shrug, trying to hide my worries. "Not like they haven't been doing that for the past five years."
"No, no. It's not the same," he says, shaking his head. "Agents are going undercover around this area, trying to catch you. You have to watch your back, or - "
"They don't even know my face. How are they even going to recognize me, let alone catch me?"
"Then how the hell do you think I recognized you?" he says, getting frustrated. "My sister's going undercover. We have the same intuition. If anything, hers is sharper, more accurate."
The news headline I read a few days ago flashes in my mind. "June Iparis. The youngest agent in the Republic history. Her?"
Metias nods. "Yes, her. If you are not careful, and continue to pull insane stunts like this, I can gurantee you. She will arrest you." His tone is serious, and I know that he's right about his sister. I bet his sister is one of those mindless soldier with the Republic's iron discipline.
"You can tell her to back away from the mission," I suggest, although I know that this won't work. The truth is, nothing's going to work.
As expected, he shakes his head. "Can't do that. Even if I did, she won't listen to me. And besides, what am I going to tell her? June, tell Commander Jameson that you don't want to go undercover because I know Day personally and he is not a bad guy?" he says sarcastically.
"You can at least try. Or go ask that Commander Jameson to unauthorize your sister from going undercover."
Why am I doing this? I feel really stupid right now, because I'm asking him to do something that is just not possible.
Metias sighs. "Why don't you get it? If I do that, I would get in trouble. I might lose my job."
I know that. That's exactly why I'm feeling so stupid right now.
And hopeless.
If his sister's that good, and if I do get arrested, who's going to take care of my family? What about Tess? How do I know that the Republic isn't going to arrest my family too? I bet they'll find out about my family and Tess.
"I know. So what am I supposed to do right now?"
He thinks for a moment. "You can keep a low profile for a while. I don't know. Just act like a legal person."
I feel the anger rise inside me. "Legal? Legal person? What does that mean, get a job or something? How the hell am I gonna get a job here? Haven't you noticed? There are a bunch of kids who live on the street and don't have a job. There are plenty of adults who don't have a job. Do you really think employers are going to let me work, if they aren't giving jobs even to more eligible people?
"Yes, I could get a legal place to live in. Okay, sure. Why not? Because I have so much money I can, what, buy an apartment? Yeah, right. Like anyone's gonna sell one to me. Why don't you understand that?
"Oh, right. Oops. I forgot. You are one rich trot, aren't you? I bet you live in the gem sector. Which gem sector do you live in? Diamond? Ruby? Emerald? Perhaps you can get a place for me?"Metias seems to be taken aback by my tone. He backs away a little. "That's not what I meant." he says quietly. "I was just advicing you not to do anythig stupid. The Republic has eyes and ears everywhere. And right now, they are this close from catching you. Want to know why? Because before your little break-in to the hospital, no one knew where you lived. Now they do. You think your accent didn't give away the area you came from? Every sector have different accents and slangs they use, Day. It was obvious you're from Lake. And I wasn't the only one who saw you. Lieutenant Bryant and some other soldiers did, too. When we see a person, and confront him later on, we know him. The way he walked, ran, spoke, and acted. We remember those details because we were trained."
He calms himself a little, evening out his breath.
"There will be agents everywhere around Lake Sector. Don't do anything stupid. Or even better, stay away from this area for a little while," he adds.
"For how long?" I ask.
"Until I contact you again."
"How would you find me?" I ask, frowning.
He smiles a little. "Don't ever underestimate me."
