[I've been told that the first two chapters didn't pull the reader in, but it got more interesting from the third chapter onwards, so just... try to get through the first two chapters :)))) also, feedback would be much appreciated!!]

"How did it happen?" asked Detective John Bernard.

"It seems that they were injected with something," replied Detective Simone Ellyas, crouching over the three bodies on the asphalt. She pointed to one of their arms, where there was a small dot, indicating injection.

"Something?" Bernard inquired.

"Well, we haven't exactly done any blood analysis yet. We'll get the results after the autopsy, but I have no idea; maybe poison?" She frowned over the bodies, and turned to Bernard.

"Forensics haven't found anything; no fingerprints, DNA -"

"No suspects," Bernard interrupted.

"Nothing. We haven't even found any distinguishable patterns or connections between the victims. Two females, one male, different races, ages; no relation whatsoever."

"Ah well," sighed Bernard, "I'm sure we'll find something. We always do."

"Yes..." frowned Ellyas, evidently in deep thought.

Bernard started towards the car, looking back at Ellyas.

"You coming?" he called.

"Yeah, yeah," she replied distantly, glancing down at the bodies for a few more seconds, then making her way towards the car.

"So, how was your date?"

"Wha- oh, right," Bernard replied. "It... it went okay."

They were in the car, driving to the police station. It was a grey and cloudy day, not unusual for a summer morning in Toronto. It was also thirty degrees.

"Just okay?" laughed Ellyas. "How bad was it?"

"It was awful, actually" Bernard replied bluntly.

Ellyas giggled, "What happened?"

Bernard smiled, "He was kind of an a -,"

Elyas's phone began to ring. She picked it up, still smiling, "This is Detective Ellyas."

They pulled into the driveway. Bernard turned to the detective and saw that she was not smiling anymore.

"We're on our way," she said, and Bernard immediately turned the car around. "Where to?"

"Markham and Lawrence," she answered, grimly. "Another murder."

"Starvation," informed the coroner, as they carried the body to the van.

"He starved to death?" asked Bernard, confused. "How is that murder?"

The busy intersection was full of people crowded around the police tape, edging to take a look at the emaciated body.

"A few witnesses saw a black van pull up here, dump the body and drive off. They didn't see the actual suspect, however."

"When was this exactly?" asked Ellyas.

The coroner closed the back doors to the van. "The witnesses claim it was dumped at around 9:00."

Ellyas looked as though she was about to say something before her phone went off again. "Excuse me," she said, as she hurried off to answer it.

"So what, a man starves another man to death and dumps his body at a major intersection?" Bernard asked incredulously.

The coroner looked at Bernard grimly, and replied, "You tell me, Detective." With that, he walked away towards the van.

Ellyas came back, looking overwhelmed.

"Another murder!" she exclaimed in disbelief. "Double murder, actually. And get this; witnesses reported hearing the two gunshots just after 9:00 this morning."

Bernard realized what she was getting at. "The body here was dumped at 9:00, those men were shot at 9:00..."

"And it's safe to assume the three bodies that were injected could have been dumped on the street at 9:00 as well," Ellyas finished.

"You think they're all related?" Bernard asked skeptically.

"It's definitely possible," Ellyas shrugged. "Listen, I'll check these bodies out, you go back to the station."

"Sounds good," replied Bernard, walking back to his car.

"Oh, and Bernard!" called Ellyas.

"Mmm?"

"I'm sure you'll have better luck on your next date," she assured him, smiling.

Bernard chuckled, getting into the car and driving away.
