The creaky horse drawn carriage bumped over the old cobblestone roads, loud heavy rain thundering against the roof. A young Chuck Shurley clutched his robe tighter around himself for warmth as he peered out behind the window curtain, watching trees and houses pass. The moon shone brightly, a dime of light in the dark.

They were only passing through, as they did with most places. Chuck was almost certain he would see this little town again someday though. If everything went to plan that is. As they past the last of the houses and once again were on the road, he turned away from the window, letting the curtain fall gently back in place.

He sat quietly for a moment listening to the pitter-patter of raindrops outside. After a considerable amount of time, he reached underneath the seat and fumbled around for his tablet. Once he found it, he turned it on and opened the news app. He scanned the headlines trying to find one about him.

Unsurprisingly, nothing about his little "incident" was mentioned. Chuck scoffed. Of course there wouldn't be anything. There's no way Amara would let the press know about it, he thought. Chuck slipped the tablet back under the seat and pulled his robe around himself. He tucked his legs onto the seat and curled up, deciding to have a little nap.

~*~*~*~

A loud banging on the roof of the carriage startled Chuck awake, and he nearly fell off the bench. Quickly regaining his composure, he leaned over towards the window and pulled the curtain away. It was still raining heavily, but it was no longer night. A small town was just barley visible from the window, and Chuck couldn't help but feel disappointment well up inside him.

Another small one, he thought. He'd never find anyone in a small town like this. People in smaller towns were close and tended to help each other out. He almost considered suggesting to his drivers that they skip this town, but he then realized they needed to restock for the rest of their long trip. Chuck was beginning to feel hopeless. They had only found two in the past week, some young boys named Castiel and Gabriel.

As they neared the town Chuck began to gather the things he would need for their stop. He straightened his robe and grabbed his fancy top hat, plopping it on his head. The carriage shook and Chuck momentarily lost his balance, grabbing at the back of the seat to keep himself from falling. He muttered a few curses under his breath, and waited for the carriage to come to a stop.

After a few more minutes they pulled up in front of the Inn, Chuck grabbed his umbrella and popped open the door. Rain poured down in icy sheets and he spared no time in opening his umbrella. Whilst the drivers came around to bring his bags out and sign them into the inn, Chuck (rather reluctantly,) went to check back alleys and side streets for new "recruits"

~*~*~*~

After almost an hour of walking in puddles and muck, Chuck was getting ready to head back to the inn. His feet hurt, he was cold, he was very hungry, and he was contemplating just sleeping in the streets. He decided to just take back routes and alleyways on his was back, just in case. As he passed by a bakery he could smell the sweet aroma of cakes and bread wafting from the stone building. He gave the bakery a longing glance and just as he was about to pass it completely, something cause his eye.

Well, more like someone.

Chuck took a few steps backwards and stood in front of the shivering lump leaning against the wall. It appeared that whoever was, was huddled underneath a burlap bag of sorts. He tilted his head slightly to the right before crouching down in front of the figure. "Hey," he gingerly reached a hand out towards the bag and made to pull it off of the figure.

Before he had a change to move the bag though, the person underneath shifted and the bag was lowered revealing not one, but two, children. Chuck couldn't help but notice that the older looking one was acting rather protective of the younger one. The older one had bright green eyes and short blondish hair, while the other had longer brown hair, and appeared to be sleeping.

Chuck felt a deep sadness welling up inside him, he could not fathom why two children would be forced to stay out in the rain with only a burlap sack to keep them warm. "What are your names?" He questioned. The boy looked at him suspiciously and didn't say anything. "My name is Chuck Shurley, I want to help you," he could tell that the boy didn't quite trust him. The boy quietly murmured something under his breath. "What was that?" Chuck tilted his head towards him so he could hear him better.

"I said I'm Dean, and this is Sam," the boy, Dean, nodding towards his sleeping companion. "Is he your brother?" Dean nodded. "Dean, do you and Sam have a home? Or some family?" Chuck gently questioned him. He saw a look of sadness flit across Dean's face and immediately knew the answer. "Alright, sorry. I didn't mean to upset you." The boy glared at him "I don't need your pity," he said angrily.

"Then I won't give you pity. I'm giving you and your brother a chance. A chance to have a home, comfort, a family," He noted Dean's expression change with that last one.

"Dean, how do you and your brother feel about the circus?"

Right, so! This is my first story I guess. I'm just going to clear up a thing, the time period this takes place in is a bit different if you hadn't noticed XD A lot of the places that they go to will be quite old fashioned, but advanced technology does exist. There are some modern places they will go, but I really liked the idea of some old fashioned stuff. Basically I couldn't decide on an era XP I listened to Derek & Brandon Fiecher's 1 hour of Creepy Circus and Carnival Music while writing this and I think it really helps set the mood :) big thanks to QqueensMoonsCharlie  for the title! Hope y'all enjoyed the first chapter!
🖖 peace out bitches!
