“When we find a home that fits, we can step into it and pull its beautiful walls around our shoulders” ---Unknown
The day of my graduation came…
I don’t want to admit it but I’m so jealous of my schoolmates… They were with their family and friends… taking pictures… congratulating each other… really enjoying the moment… while me, I was all alone. Self-pitying myself, I decided to visit my parents’ grave after the ceremony.
“Eomma… Appa… look what I have in my hand.” I said showing the diploma I received as if they were actually in front of me and alive. “Can you see it? At last I graduated~ Eomma, Appa… I miss you… I miss you both so much.” The accumulated pain in my heart started my eyes to ooze tears. I can’t see clearly with the tears leaking out of my eyes, the pain is excruciating. “Appa, is this how you felt? It really hurts…” I said thudding my chest. “Appa, why? I still don’t understand… I’m still here. Why do you have to do that? It’s so lonely… I don’t know if I could go on.” The image of the guy I met at the Han River suddenly flashback in my mind. It so crazy, I was crying so hard and with that recollection of how that face look at me made a smile on my lips. “Did you send that angel for me? I was so absurd, I haven’t asked for his name.” I sighed in regret. “I promise him I’ll live a life… and I guess I really should… Appa, Eomma, I swear to you I’m gonna keep moving on. I’ll be strong… you’ll be proud of me... you’ll see.” I said again with the sudden change of mood.
My day off at work, just like what Choi ahjussi promised we went to his friend who has this rooftop house for rent. It was an ordinary small house in a rooftop with a low and wide table out side. (If you ever watched Rooftop Prince, it looks like Park Ha’s house before it was renovated to a penthouse). Even though it was small, with a little repairing, it would look cozy and comfortable. And with the help of ahjussi, I got to rent the house for a cheaper price. I’m so excited moving my things there and decorate it to my likings.
Ahjussi gave me a week off in my job so I can move to my new place. First thing I did was cleaning the whole house… removing all the unnecessary things and leave others that I can still used. It took me the whole day with that general cleaning. The next day, I transferred all my belongings from the apartment we used to live to my new house and done some shopping for the things I needed in decorating the place… It’s tiring but it was fun… the feeling of being independent, I’m enjoying it so much.
The next morning, the noise outside the house alarmed me to wake up and run outside the door to check it. In my surprise it was Choi~ahjussi and his family along with two men who were busy hammering something and cutting things… carpenters I guess…
“Good morning Ye Eun~ah!” Ahjussi greeted with a smile.
“Eonni!” two of his daughter shouted in chorus and run to me.
“Oh girls… what are you all doing here?” I asked hugging the two of them.
“We’re gonna help you fixing your new house, eonni,” Yoon Mi said. She was the older daughter of Ahjussi. She was eight years old.
“Yes eonni, we’ll help you,” the other one said. She was Min Ju, and she’s six years old.
“Aw~ you girls are so sweet. Thank you!” I kissed the both of them in their cheeks.
“Good morning Ye Eun~ah, I brought breakfast for all of us. Is it okay to intrude you kitchen to prepare these?” it was ahjussi’s wife. She was holding two large picnic baskets.
“Oh Ahjumma~ of course. Thank you so much!” I took the other basket out of her hand and let here in the house. “I’m so sorry the house is still a little bit messy.” She just smiled at me.
The two carpenters and ahjussi worked so past in repairing everything needed to be fixed in the house. Na Young ahjumma and I, along with two kids, we cleaned and decorated the interior of the house. For the last touch Ahjumma put some more flower pots on the layered stand for potted plants outside the house. We finished everything that has to be done before the sun set. After dinner, I thank them for their entire hard work and bid them goodbye.
“Home sweet Home…” I said to myself. I was in front of my new home after I had a shower. I was admiring the result of our hard work. The place turned out so beautiful. It’s more than I expected it to be.
I lie down on the wide low table outside. The sky is full of stars. Remembering my parents again, my eyes get teary once more, but surprisingly I don’t feel alone any longer. I guess it’s because of Choi Ahjussi and his family. They were really good to me and I’m very thankful having them around. And once again, the Han River guy recurred in my mind.
“Who could he be? I wanted to see him once again.” I sighed in my wishful thinking. The day after my dad’s funeral I went back to the same spot I met that guy, hoping I might see him again. I also tried going there a couple of times after my class or even after work, but unluckily there’s no sign of him. I guess his really an angel in disguised to save me. I looked at my wristwatch and it’s already ten o’ clock in the evening. Tired of all the work done in the house I decided to call it a day and rest.
