I walked up the stairs to the house, the sun coming out from behind a cloud. I felt the sun on my upper back, as my baby blue halted neck exposed it. I whipped around, letting the warm LA sun, warm my cheeks. It was the middle of summer, meaning it was summer break, leaving me a week to settle in to the new house before school rolled around again. I shuddered, the idea of starting a new school seemed extremely daunting.
I walked up the stairs, following a hallway down to two rooms and a bathroom. I decided on the room with a balcony, overlooked the beach that was across the road. I stared out the window, noticing the Santa Monica Pier in the distance.
I set me things down on the unmade bed, and ran back downstairs to collect more of my things. I dropped off most of my belongings into my room, I lay down on my bed, facing the ceiling. Everything was moving so fast, since dads death, life had seemed to whiz past me.
I walked back downstairs, finding mom unloading a few groceries, in to the fridge. I had been itching to go to the beach since mom mentioned our house was across from the beach. "Hey mom can I go to the beach for a bit?" She continued loading the apples into the fridge " sure honey, take a jumper though, it's getting a bit chilly outside" . I grabbed my blue adidas jumper off the counter and slipped on my jandals. I ran out the door, crossing the road and stepping onto the light sand. I closed my eyes and let the sound of the sea fill my ears. I loved the sound of the repetitive waves hitting the sand.
I could faintly hear the sound of a strumming guitar, dad used to be a bomb guitar player, I could listen to him strumming to hours on end. I looked to where the sound was coming from and noticed a boy, he was sitting about 5 meters away from me. His hair matched the colour of the sand, kind of yellow. I noticed something black on his lip and guessed it was a piercing of sorts. I always found lip piercings weirdly hot, I don't know why, I just did. I tune he played felt familiar, little things! He was playing little things by one direction, my all time favourite song. I also heard the low him of him singing, I closed my eyes and listened intently, " your hand fits in mine like it's made just for me, but bear this in mind it was, meant to be...." I sing the rest of the lyrics in my head until the strumming stopped and I watched his walk off the beach.
The wind starting picking up, clouds setting in. I decided to head back to the house. I walked in and something delicious was cooking, "mmmm" I hummed, walking into the kitchen, " whatcha cookin?" I asked, leaning on the counter. " Apple pie, for dessert, I invited our neighbours over for dinner and I thought I would bake a treat for everyone" mom smiled softly, clearly making an effort. " you better get changed, they will be here in 20 minutes and no offence, but you smell of salt water" she lightly laughed. " okay, be right back" I walked up the stairs and into the bathroom, I stared at myself in the mirror, my usually wavy blonde hair, ruffled and frizzy, a small knot at the back that I tried getting out with my comb. I failed. I peeled my jumper and then my tshirt off, then my shorts, I stood in my bra and undies, still attempting to comb the knot out of my hair. I hopped in the shower and quickly washed my hair, not bothering to shave my legs. I got out and wrapped a towel round my waist and another in my hair. Walking into my room. I slid open my closet door and pulled out some dark jeans and a floaty white top, I applied a bit of mascara and foundation and a bit of pale pink lipstick that was nearly gone. I made a mental note to go shopping for a new one soon, I pulled out my hair dryer from one of the boxes and starting blow drying my hair before the doorbell rang. I shoved a few bracelets on my wrists and applied my favourite vanilla perfume before heading downstairs. I head mom open the door, " Hi! Welcome, come on in, mind the mess " I heard her say, In a very excited tone.
"Linda, I hope you don't mind, we brought our son, Luke too" the woman exclaimed, " no no, he is welcome!" Mom replied. I walked over to everyone, all crowding awkwardly in the doorway. " Hi! You must be Nina?" The woman asked, I guessed she was about 45, she was quite short, her hair a light brown colour, her eyes were icy blue, very beautiful. " yeah, hi, I'm Nina, it's nice to meet you" I said politely smiling, with my teeth showing. " how are you liking this LA heat? " it's good, hotter than Seattle but I should get used to it soon" I replied. " oh by the way, this is my husband, Ross, I'm Karen and this is our son Luke" she smiled, her icy eyes glittering.
My gaze was directed to her son, Luke.
It was him, the boy, from the beach earlier, wow, was all I could think In my head, this guy was hot, I felt my cheeks flush a bit, as I smiled back at him. Mom then beckoned Karen and Ross into her large kitchen and the three of them left us, standing awkwardly in the doorway.
