Poem 11: My Parents

I don’t think I

Quite managed to

Say just quite

How much I care.

I see your sacrifices

I see your mistakes

I see your tears –

You never hid them.

Thank you.

For being you.

I’m sorry.

I’m sorry I hurt you.

I’m sorry I didn’t

Apologise.

I’m sorry I probably

Wasn’t worth all that

You gave.

But who could be?

When you both gave

Everything.

We never quite

Got around to talking

Did we?

We never quite

Understood each other?

But we are

So perfect how we are.

Especially those

Perfect, rare moments.

I remember them all.

Do you see

That I’m grateful?

I never quite managed

To say just quite how much

You mean to me.

So just so

You know

After all my mistakes

Thank you.

I’m sorry.

I love you.

I’ll make you proud.
