Your phone was going ballistic. Sitting up, you squinted at your phone screen. The message was clear, Steve was awake. You wasted no time in thrashing out of bed, snatching a coat and some suitable pants.
What time was it? 5:17.
You drove as fast as legally possible to the base, not knowing how Steve would react to being awake when he should've died due to his injuries. Stoplights got in the way, red lights keeping you from Steve. Annoyed, you ran one.
I can deal with this shit later.
You pulled into the parking lot, stopping in your assigned space. Your feet beat against the pavement, your movement quickening as you drew closer and closer to the front door. The elevator pulled you up to the hospital wing, your stomach twisting at the thought of seeing Steve. The lights were dimmed, and it was awfully quiet. Peeking around the corner, all you saw was a nurse pushing a linen cart down the hall. You went to the locker room area and threw on your lab coat and name tag. There were guards outside of Steve's room, they quickly stopped you and asked for identification.
"(Y/n) (Y/l/n). I operated on Steve, and I need to see how his wounds are and how he's healing." You stated, leaning back on your heels. The men talked to one another, deciding whether or not to let you in.
"Let her in." You heard a deep voice say from the inside of the room. They stepped aside as you made your way into the room. Steve looked like hell, his face pale and his IV pumping a cocktail of antibiotics and morphine. "I'm director Nick Fury, and it has come to my attention that you're the reason why our soldier is still alive." Nick said, sitting down in a chair.
"Well, it is my job, sir. Plus, nobody else was going to take him in and I was the only one willing to take on such a high risk operation." You explained, gripping your clipboard a little tighter.
"No need to act so formal, (y/n). I know all about you and Steve." He chuckled, locking his fingers together. You nodded, his statement not easing your feelings.
"Hey, I'm still here." Steve croaked, cracking a small smile. You approached him slowly, brushing his hair back.
"How do you feel?" You asked.
"Like I was blown up." He replied, flopping his head back onto the pillow.
"We stormed in on Hydra, but they threw a pretty nasty punch. Basically a grenade on steroids." Fury explained. You nodded and looked over Steve's vitals.
"You should be fine. The serum should improve your state within the next few hours, just don't go batshit crazy." He nodded slowly and fell back asleep within minutes.
Fury turned to you, his face impressed. "I want you in the avengers tower from now on. How do you feel about that?"
"I would be glad to! What would I be doing?" You asked, sitting down.
"Saving lives. Same thing you do here, just with more important people like the avengers and highly valued agents." He explained, intertwining his fingers together. You nodded, thinking of all the options. It would be extremely high staked, but you could do it.
