I nervously twist the ring on and off my finger. I  am fidgety and  restless, my eyes flitting around the room. The monitor is beeping in a  rather unnerving way, and the white walls of infirmaries have always made me edgy. I look up as the nurse comes in, and smile as Tobas comes in behind her.  He sits down next to me on the hard bed and puts his arm around me. Curling my arms around my stomach, I look up at the nurse. “So?” I ask, my voice agitated.

“The tests came back positive. Congratulations, Tris, you are going to be a mother.”

“Oh!” I exclaim, and I wrap my arms tightly around my husband’s waist. I know it is soon, to be pregnant at nineteen, but I just  can't care less  I look up at Tobias and his ocean blue eyes are looking back into mine, full of happiness. I love that look. It was the look in his eyes when he first kissed me. The look when old me he loved me for the first time.  When he asked me to be his wife.  I am sure I had the same emotion in my own eyes, because he would stare back at me just as intently as I stared at him. I have so many fond memories of that look.

We were just sitting around, laughing about something, when he just,... said it. He took my hands in is and asked me.  To marry him.  I was still grinning from before, and the hilarity was still bubbling out of me. I choked out a breathy “yes” before I burst into laughter again. It was one of the most unromantic proposals ever, So basically, it was perfect.

Most of our family members were gone, but Evelyn still came for her son. I had Amar walk me down the  aisle, and we had Christina initiate the ceremony in a little field behind the compound. Of course, Christina made a terrible minister, and she kept cracking up as we said our vows. Zeke was there as Tobias’s best man, and I had Caleb be  mine. I thought he should be a part of this, since he was my brother and all. I havent been to many weddings, but  I am sure ours was the best  one of all. Halfway through Christina’s self composed poem about “waiting till marriage”, Tobias and I ran for it, me in my white skirt and sandals and him in a black shirt in jeans.

Looking at that look, the look that made all of this happen, makes me want to grab his face between my hands and kiss him right here and now. Unfortunately, the chirpy little nurse is still here, smiling and glancing around as if waiting for something.

“Um, thanks! We will keep in touch then, I guess....” I say,  trying to edge her out. She just smiles at me and bounces on her heels some more.

Tobias looks at her earnestly. “We just really need some time alone to deal with the news.”

“Oh, of course. Absolutely. Take all the time you need, “ she flutters, and walks away, leaving us alone in the room.

“Nice one,” I tell him, grinning.

He smiles slyly, his blue eyes mischievous. “Well, this may have gotten awkward if she stayed in here...”

I lean in, crushing my mouth to his. Lips still moving in unison, he lays me down on the hospital bed, never breaking the kiss. “I love you, he murmurs.

“I love you more.” I whisper back, and I push my hands up his shirt, pulling it off his back. He murmurs against my neck, trailing kisses down to my shoulder, and I- “Oh! Oh, my! I am terribly sorry!”

The nurse is back. Tobias and I grin at each other. Standing up, we right ourselves, him tugging his shirt back on, me fixing my hair. Only stopping briefly to shake hands with the nurse, we just walk straight out the door, not looking back., silly grins splitting our faces in two.  I am giggling uncontrollably, and his shoulders shake with silent laughter.Outside, I steal one more kiss. He wraps his arms around me, cradling my stomach lightly. I sigh contentedly.

I can put my past life behind me

because this is where my true life begins

                                 and it is perfect..
