"Welcome to Wellspring, one of the most beautiful places on earth. We have many attractions: the lovely Wellspring lake stocked with fish; and you mustn't forget the fishing tournaments on weekends, nor the market square filled with many boutiques and cafes. This beautiful town is filled with many smiling faces from the local church minister to our lovely mayor, Savannah O'Connor."
Maria watched from a distance as the tours began at the Wellspring town hall.
If only they knew. Maria thought as the guide began her rounds.
She ignored the irritating voice and continued walking down the alley. As she walked the dark path, she heard footsteps echoing softly behind her.
It's probably nothing. Maria thought, trying to calm her nerves. Suddenly, she stopped and, for a moment, the footsteps continued. Okay, now I know I'm not crazy; maybe it's a cat, yeah, a cat that wears shoes.. that makes sense, right? No, not right, just turn around already. Ready? Turn around... Now! As Maria fought with herself, she didn't notice the man creeping closer, watching her every move.
She slowly turned her head.
"Boo!"
Maria screamed as she punched her pursuer in the face.
"Ow, what the hell?" Maria slowly opened her eyes to see a young man with raven black hair and crystal blue eyes standing in front of her.
"Jack? Why would you scare me like that? What's wrong with you?" Maria yelled as Jack, her best friend, held his bleeding nose, "Oh my god, wait, oh my god! You're bleeding."
"No shit, Sherlock, you have one hell of a right hook." Jack pressed his white sleeve to his nose and proceeded to run his hand down the leg of his jeans, leaving behind a trail of blood.
Maria tucked a piece of curly red hair behind her ear as she reached into her bag "Here, take this, you'll ruin your clothes with blood stains." She handed Jack a tissue.
"Thanks." Jack shoved the tissue into is pants pocket and proceeded to walk with Maria, "Where ya headed?"
"Home, I have to get there before Savannah gets back. I'm running a bit late i still haven't started dinner." Maria continued to walk as she looked to the ground remembering to earlier events that day.
"Oh, did she have one of her "fits" again?" Jack stopped in his spot, Maria turned around with tears filling the brim of her eyes. As a tear slid down her cheek Jack wiped it away and pulled her close kissing the top of her head. "I know its hard now, but one of these days I will get you out of there and we can leave, together."
"Promise?"
He wiped another tear off of her freckled cheek and pushed a strand of her hair back, "I promise."
