Chapter 4

Precision was key; timing was everything.  Calista was very still and had a stare that could cut through the glass.  Glancing at the clock one last time it was time for action.  Opening the glass door, she very carefully lifted the soufflé out of the oven and set it on the cooling rack.  It was perfect.  She was pleased.

Applause burst in through the open French doors accompanied by Ryan’s whistling.  Calista smiled at the 3 people seated at the breakfast table outside on the deck.  They were all waiting for the crowning glory to their breakfast, her special three-cheese soufflé.

Ryan and Blake were fighting each other for the lion-share of the bacon, Keira was still in her yoga clothes and Calista has been cooking up a storm.

It was Saturday morning, and apart from breakfast, it was also their monthly meeting.

The boys were eating like starved wolves while Keira and Calista discussed their shopping trip for the afternoon.

“Right guys, let’s get to it.  This is going to be a busy month, so everyone needs to be on guard 24/7.  Keira, what’s happening in the labs?”

Keira put down her coffee cup and held up her tablet.  Statistics appeared and she scrolled through them.

“Mostly final reports being submitted, some last-minute testing, the usual.  These are some pictures I got off the microscope cameras.  The pills look like a capsule wrapped in a capsule, the outer layer clear and the inner coloured depending on strength.  Ryan asked me to look at some surveillance from Thursday night.“

She tapped the screen and the video-clip started.

“Which shows 2 people entering Lab 4, wearing standard issue clothing, but they were working the cameras, not one clear shot of their faces.  They go in, 5 minutes later they come out, seems innocent enough except they knew they were on video.  Height and gait analysis returned nothing.  These are not Excel Lab employees.  What’s more is that they did not enter through the front lobby.  The first time they appear on video is in the corridor.”

Calista leant forward and paused the video.  “Who are they and what did they want?”

“As far as I can tell, they’re ghosts.  They were never there.”

They exchanged glances across the table.

Ryan finished his coffee before he spoke.  “The only person on earth that can get in and out of that building undetected is me.  Whoever these people are, they are obviously not amateurs.  Keira, will you set up an alert for anomalies like these if it happens again?”

Keira nodded.

Calista looked around the table.  “Blake?  Is there anything strange going on in Sales?”

Blake was busy buttering another piece of toast.

“Nope, everyone is gearing up to push Endumax the moment it launches.  Preliminary orders have gone through the roof and I’m booked solid for the next month on trips all around the world.”

“Alright guys, like I said, busy month.  Let’s be alert and do our jobs….”  Calista’s voice was suddenly drowned out by the very loud sound of helicopter blades slicing through the air.

Everyone looked up in surprise as a shiny black and silver four-seater helicopter touched down on the lawn next to the pool.

“What the?”  Calista got up and leant forward over the railing to get a better view.  “What the hell is Commander Baker doing here?”
