Chapter 5

“Other players?”  Calista demanded more than asked.  “Which side?”

“We were hoping you could tell us.”  Commander Baker stated.  He sat across from her at the table with Lewis to his right.

“We only just identified two ‘ghosts’ sir, we are far away from making a definitive identification.  How did you know?”  Calista’s mind was reeling.  They haven’t had a breach in almost two years.  Now they don’t even know from which side.

Lewis answered by tapping on the media board behind him.  It sprang to life and displayed a graph with an extended and highly elevated energy spike.  “We recorded an energy spike Thursday evening, exact position unknown, it was too short to pinpoint.  However we know it was in the city and not at a previous entry point either.”

Calista knew the location.  “Sir, that was at Excel!  We were just discussing it when you landed!  They were caught on video; I’ll have Keira send you the footage.  Are we absolutely positive about the breach?”

Lewis nodded.  “The energy pattern is a match.”

Ten years ago shortly after Calista was first recruited, the first portal opened by accident at the CERN Laboratory.  The energy created by the Large Hadron Collider caused a tear in the time-space continuum and the portal was formed.  Held stable by the magnetic field created by the collider a probe was sent through and it arrived, unscathed in the closest parallel universe.  That first historic portal taught them two things:  The portal is very unpredictable, and that it can open anywhere if the ‘energy frequency’ is an exact match.

Still a young IT intern, Keira was the first to isolate and identify that frequency and that’s how she met Calista.  Calista was recruited half-way through law school and part of the then Special Agent Baker’s team.  The exact reason for their recruitment wasn’t clear until Agent Baker introduced them to Ryan, Ryan having been recruited straight out of high-school.  The big surprise was when Blake was recruited immediately after winning gold in the Archery division at the Olympics.

It became clear.  They were all hand-picked for their skills and under Bakers’ strict guidance underwent extreme training.  They were not the only unit of their kind but probably one of the youngest in the history of The Division.  The portals opened sporadically and their unit was called in once or twice to handle containment.  On the last breach it was discovered that the parallel universe was not the same as the last.  The first was nicknamed ‘Ares’, for the overwhelming warring that consumed the earth there.  The second ‘Atlas’, the earth a lot more technologically advanced than ours.

Due to its advanced state Atlas immediately realized what had happened and vowed to not let it happen again.  Ares on the other hand wanted to trade weapons technology but were unable to open the portal from their side with consistent stability.  The Division as they called themselves were an international organisation consisting of agents from government departments of all the major countries.  Everyone was divided into units and used to investigate, control, contain or observe anything from major advances in technology to international trade.

Calista’s unit was inserted into Excel once it became obvious that a major advancement in pharmaceuticals were imminent.  Now it seemed someone from ‘the other side’ was also observing, the question was which side?

Commander Baker tapped on the table to regain Calista’s attention.  “Agent, I think we must consider the possibility that Ares or Atlas has found a way to exactly manipulate a portal directly at Excel Labs.  This is a major development; we need your unit to monitor this closely and keep me updated!”

The meeting continued a little while longer while they consolidated the information they had.  It was late afternoon by the time Calista was driven back home by a driver.  At home Keira met her at the door.

“We need to talk.  There are some new developments.”  Calista was dying for a cup of coffee and pushed past Keira towards the kitchen, but got distracted by loud shouts coming from outside.

“So do I.”  Keira trailed behind her and looked down from the balcony at the scene below.
