He would not admit defeat, tossing herbs at her, chanting spells in different languages, even some of them she was sure he had made up on the spot. Though after tossing what he called "Holy water" at her he finally stopped, even offering to let her sleep on the sofa. Which she was feeling a little drowsy but she was not going to sleep in the apartment with the guy who spent a lot of time trying to send her away. Admittedly she was hoping it would work and send her home somehow.
She knew she could just try to rest in a hallway or anywhere really. But she weaved in and out of the apartments until she found one on the other side of the hallway that was unoccupied. It felt silly, but she curled up on the floor allowing her mind to wander away.
They lived on the outskirts of town with the rest of the poor. Her family was one of the wealthiest of the poor, if it could be called that. Her brother Asa was gifted with magic, a mage they called them. He brought the family slightly out of poverty but not much not right yet, as he was still an apprentice. What he brought home allowed their mother to buy more food, things they didn't grow in their garden. Occasionally he could bring home things, things the rich only had like television sets. Though it was a smaller version of what she imagined that the rich had it suited them well enough.
They were not interested in it but their neighbors regularly came to visit to see what was on. There was plays, music and on the occasion information about the going on in the capitol. Though for them, the capital was days away -- may as well had been in another country for all they were concerned. But the television was something new for everyone, so they sat and listened.
"You shouldn't do that"
"Do what, mama?"
"Daydream like that, it's not healthy."
The light blasted through the curtainless windows. Unsure if she fell asleep -- she felt rested so it was possible that she just woke up. But the feeling was nothing like she was used to as a regular person, she just woke up. No fussing or taking her time to pull herself out of her dream.
A mouse mossied on by sniffy toward her she angrily waved at it to go away. It was once again noisy outside, people yelling, horns and whatever else was out there. When a man in a suit walked through the doors with a couple discussing the apartment, she knew it was time to leave.
Down the hallway there was a child playing with a colorful plane, making the noise as he nose dived it. This child she was able to walk by without him giggling like the group yesterday.
"Some can see you others may not." the guys voice appeared from the doorway of his apartment.
The little boy looked up at him, gave him a dirty look before running off to the other side of the hallway.
"Does that happen to you a lot?"
"Kind of." He shrugged, running his hand through his hair. It was a dusty blonde -- almost brown. Thick and it looked as if he actually tried to maintain it, "Hey, what is your name anyway since you're sticking around?"
They walked quietly down the stairwell. A woman walked through her, the guy held back a laugh.
"Are you still going to try to send me off to an afterlife?" She asked when they entered the outside world -- the sun splashing around them. She raised her hands, embracing the rays but there wasn't anything to it -- just light shining around and inside of her.
"Nah, my name is Michael by the way."
"Katrina."
