Chapter Twenty-Three
Frontlines

★ ★ ★ ★

After a couple minutes of wandering, Diana eventually found Tony in the area where Loki's containment cell used to be. In the process of the two repairing the propeller, Loki had not only murdered Phil Coulson, but had trapped Thor in the containment cell and ejected him from the helicarrier. As for Bruce, during the explosion in the laboratory, he had transformed into his alter persona and had disappeared, escaping from the helicarrier.

Tony noticed her entrance and simply glanced at her. Silence filled the room, which didn't ease either of the two. However, neither felt the need to break it. Diana harshly bit her bottom lip, her gaze flickering over the spot that held droplets of Phil Coulson's blood.

"Was he married?" Diana recognized the new voice to be Steve's. Diana hadn't felt the need to answer and remained silent, her back turned to him.

"No. There was a... cellist, I think," Tony answered him. Diana smirked remembering when Phil had first told her about her. He had been so happy, them it ended because Phil cared about her safety more than he did about his own happiness. Diana smiled at his selfless and benevolent personality.

"I'm sorry. He seemed like a good man," Steve said, attempting to give the two his condolences.

"He was an idiot," Diana bluntly stated, with a scoff. She hadn't been trying to be inconsiderate, but she thought that Phil could have at least brought back up if he was going against Loki.

Steve raised an eyebrow at her harsh words, "Why? For believing?"

"For taking on Loki alone," Tony answered, practically having read Diana's mind. Diana sighed, glancing over her shoulder to look at them.

"He was doing his job," Steve defended the man. The dead man, Diana's thoughts rang.

Tony continued to argue approaching Steve, "He was out of his league. He should have waited. He should have..."

"Sometimes there isn't a way out, Tony," Steve stated, speaking from experience.

"Right. I've heard that before," Tony said and attempted to leave the area.

Diana sighed in frustration, "Watch your tongue, Tony."

"Is this the first time you've lost a soldier?" Steve asked him. Diana gritted her teeth, feeling a surge of old memories resurface. She couldn't help but be reminded of the people she had lost in her years. Antiope. Steve Trevor. Etta Candy. Sameer. Charlie. Chief. Bucky. Howard. Steve.
