"Hey!" Bexley said to the people behind the door. Two girls that were covered with heavy material came in.
"It is freezing outside," Carly said, not noticing me.
"It seems like its getting colder and colder. When I went over to Thade's house," she nodded her head towards me. This was when they noticed my presents. Their eyes wondered between the two of us, "It wasn't as cold as it is now."
"What did you guys do?" Tessa asked.
"Put my room together. I wasn't fully unpacked yet," I explained.
"Is that all you guys did?" Carly said with a strange smile.
"We did some college searching. He won't let me become a nanny," Bexley joked.
"I said that you could, but only while you're trying to start up your writing career," I teased.
"Oh, right." The group giggled a little.
"Perfect timing!" Nanna said when she found us still in front of the door. "Dinner's ready."
As we walked into the kitchen Nanna hugged Carly and Tessa. Before we ate Gramps prayed. It wasn't as formal as my family dinners, not that we were extremely formal. It was set up buffet-style and they didn't have places set.
"So, Thade, what are your plans for after highschool?" Gramps asked me when everyone was settled down.
"College. Either OSU, or Drexel for cinematography and film," I answered.
"Like movies?" Carly asked.
"Yeah. I want to direct."
"That's interesting. Bexley has written a couple screenplays," Nanna said, causing Bexley to give her a look.
"Really?" I asked with genuine curiosity.
"Only, like, two or three. I took screenwriting freshman year. They aren't very good at all." She was trying to not get asked any farther about it. I wouldn't say she was embarrassed, but that's the best word I could come up with to describe her at that moment.
"Whatever, Bex. I've read them. I'd pay to see it in theaters," Tessa said, causing those at the table who had read her work to nod in agreement.
"I'd love to read through them. I'm more of a behind the camera person, not a behind the keyboard person. I'm always looking for something to film," I said in all seriousness. I sucked at writing the script.
"I'm really more of a novelist," Bexley said with low volume.
"How many novels have you written?" I asked.
"When did the conversation become all about me? What about like..." Bexley looked around the table until her eyes fell on Carly. "Carl! She does special-effects makeup!" She said, trying to get the attention off of her.
"You do special-effects makeup?" I asked Carly. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Bexley physically relax.
"Yeah. You want to see some pictures?" Carly asked as she got out her phone.
"Sure," I said.
*****
"This will probably make you cringe, considering you're a huge movie buff, but it's our movie and we aren't watching anything else," Bexley said as she put the disk into the player. She came back to the couch and grabbed the bowl of popcorn as she sat in the middle, separating me from Carly and Tessa.
"I like non-artsy movies too. I'm sure it's fine," I said as I took a hand full of popcorn. When I looked back up, a cat jumped onto the coffee table, blocking my view. "You have a cat."
