Last month went by so quickly. We sold our house, bought one in Torchwood , Packed up and left. I had to say goodbye to my friends, family and Pasadena. A lump forms in my throat just thinking about it.
Trees and wide spaces of grass fly by the window. That is pretty much all Torchwood is. A green open space with a population of around twenty thousand.
Dad turns a corner into a driveway that leads to the worst house I have ever seen, with a forest right in the backyard. I am missing our old house in the city already. With busy streets and tons of people Pasadena was perfect.
"At least now I know what hell looks like" Chloe mutters under her breath. She is right, the house looks like it was a set in some horror movie. There are old wooden shutters hanging off of the windows, and the house is so tilted we will probably roll right out of bed. The grass is the worst, it is mostly dead and so tall there are probably small families of rabbits living in it.
"Come on, it's just a fixer upper" Dad says jumping out of the car. If it wasn't for Kameron living nearby, I wouldn't have left California. I would much rather have lived in a pimped out dumpster in LA.
I get out of the car while Chloe helps the sleeping Ian out of his booster seat. Mom is already running up the front porch to unlock the door.
"Well at least he seems to be getting better, I guess they were right about one thing" I sigh grabbing the bags. For a while now Ian has been the perfect kid again. Instead of ripping apart my teddy bear he bought me one.
I walk up to the porch with the grass rubbing against my legs. Feeling like tiny little bugs are surrounding me. Which probably is true since they are probably living in the grass and the house.
Just looking through the front door makes my stomach flip. It honestly isn't that bad compared to the outside. It is almost modern, but has a vintage feel as well.
I look around in awe, the walls are almost all blue and green, and a huge chandelier hangs over the dining room table. If I wasn't so angry about moving to Torchwood, I might actually enjoy the house.
It is so much bigger than our old house. And there are five bedrooms so Chloe and I won't have to share. I pick the bedroom closest to the stairs and farthest away from Ian's. He sleep talks so loudly it sounds like he is standing at the end of your bed.
I sit on the bed staring out of the window. I can't deny the view is beautiful. The backyard is a field with wildflowers and is really big. The house closest to us is walking distance but behind the forest giving us privacy.
The forest is also magnificent. It isn't one of those creepy killer woods. More like woods you go for a picnic.
A shape flashes by the edge line of the trees. I squint a little trying to make out what it is. It looks like a grey animal. I never thought animals like that lived here. That minimizes the chance of me ever going back there. Well there goes my picnic idea.
Two more flashes speed by before stopping behind the first animal. Except the latecomers are different colors. One is chocolaty brown while the other one is tan or blonde. They are in the distance but I feel like they are looking at me. Maybe paranoia comes with living in Torchwood.
The first animal to appear, and probably the leader steps out from the trees. It's a huge grey wolf. It tilts its head back and howls, followed shortly by the other two. It's so loud I can hear them with the windows closed. It sends a shiver down my spine. I subconsciously bow my head a little, as if in respect.
"Riley can you come down here please?" My mom yells downstairs. I look towards the stairs groaning slightly. By the time I look back to the window, the wolves are gone. As if they were in my imagination. Oh geez I'm turning into Ian.
I need to remember to look up what other wild animals live around here. I might take out the garbage one day and get eaten by a bear.
"What's up?" I ask sitting down at the kitchen table. Chloe is sitting on the opposite side on her laptop while Ian is reading a comic book on the floor. He can't actually read more than three letter words, but he likes the pictures and pretending like he's reading.
"Can you help me put the dishes away?" Mom asks holding a plate. I don't ask why she didn't just ask Chloe who is sitting right there. There is no point in that, she will just start yelling about me being selfish.
"Are there a lot of wild animals around here?" I ask putting away some forks. It is taking ten times longer since I don't know where anything goes.
"No, why do you ask?" she says taking out more dishes from the boxes.
"I saw some wolves from my window. I thought there might be other animals" I say. It seems like an innocent enough question, but she drops a plate and looks around like someone's watching her. I think I was right about the paranoia thing.
"Are you okay" I ask. She's standing looking straight ahead like she's seeing a ghost.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Can you finish these?" She asks rushing over to Ian, picking him up and practically running out of the room. Maybe she is scared Ian might try and befriend a wolf or get eaten by a fox or something.
"What's up with her?" Chloe asks picking up some dishes. I just shrug, thinking about tomorrow.
I have the attention span of a chipmunk. First I will think of wolves, then mom, then the future.
I'm probably a little nervous because Chloe and I are both going to the local and only high school. Of course we are going to be those awkward new kids. That unlike everyone else in this town, hasn't lived here their entire lives. And that is not something to look forward to.
"I got pizza!" Dad yells coming into the house. Pizza takes my mind right off of everything and I rush in for three slices. For a girl at 5'7 and about 120 pounds, I really do eat a lot. While Chloe can barely eat one slice, without exploding.
"Can you two watch your brother after school tomorrow?" Dad asks spitting a mouthful of salad and pizza on my face. I wipe it off in disgust, Ian and my dad have not yet mastered the art of not talking while eating. I just nod my head in answer, while going to wash my face. It feels like my face walked under a hose on mist.
"Wait for me!" Ian yells running after me. He stops by the bathroom door while I wash the spit and pepperoni off my face.
"What's up?" I ask letting him follow me to my room. He sits on the bare mattress on my bed. I still have to make up my bed and get all my stuff out.
"The voice inside of me isn't mad anymore. He likes it here" Ian says happily. I push him off the bed while I put on the sheets. Maybe he is turning around to a normal kid again, one who doesn't try to push me down the stairs. He has been acting so much better since he found out we're moving. Maybe the voice being nice means he will be nice.
"That's good Ian" I say smiling. He giggles jumping on my newly made bed. It looks like so much fun, I get up there too. We just jump and laugh until Chloe comes in looking shocked.
"What the hell?" She asks laughing.
"Ooh swear word" Ian laughs bouncing into a sitting position, then bouncing back up. If I tried that I would probably break my hip.
"Come on its fun" I yell. She doesn't need much convincing. She jumps on the bed doing this super impressive twirl.
I haven't jumped on my bed since I was like 7. Mostly because I had a twin bed and would probably fall off the edge. We must be making a ton of noise because my parents suddenly slide into my field of vision when I do a spin. They must have been standing there for a long time watching us.
I gasp, and fall right off the bed taking Ian and Chloe with me. Who both fall on my ribs almost breaking my back.
"Children" Dad laughs pulling up Ian and taking him out of the room. Probably for his bath. My dad usually puts a ton of bubbles in the bath tub with a whole bunch of bath toys in there for Ian. They have a theory if they make it fun now, he will always like being clean.
"I'm gonna like go... "Chloe says seeing my mom's evil eye. She limps out of the room looking awkward. I gingerly get up edging carefully around my bed. I jump in putting the covers up to my nose, watching my mom carefully.
"Hey mom" I say awkwardly. Instead of slapping me with a lamp she bursts out laughing. I smile hesitantly while she comes over to me.
"Excited for school?" She asks sitting on my bed. I wasn't even thinking about how nervous I was until she said anything. Now it comes rushing back like a memory waterfall.
"Um" I say looking up at the ceiling. it is painted dark blue with stars like the night sky. It is somewhat soothing. Mom just pats my leg somewhat understanding. She used to move around a lot as a kid. So she knows what being the new kid is like.
"Are you worried about Ian?" I ask randomly while yawning. It is only eight o'clock but I am so tired from moving.
"No, not really he is getting better" She says thinking about it. I raise an eyebrow suspiciously. What parent wouldn't be worried when their six year old was acting like he was possessed by a voice only he could hear?
"What about the voice?" I ask closing my eyes. She just sighs standing up to go.
"I'm not going to lie to you Riley. I'm not going to tell you now, but one day you will understand" She says walking out of the room. She really knows how to be dramatic. When am I going to know? And what exactly am I going to know?
If it wasn't for me being so tired I would probably sit here and figure it out. But right now my eyelids are drooping and I can feel myself slowly falling asleep.
