4 YEARS LATER...
Fourteen year old Iris sat on the bench as if she was waiting for the bus while her stomach grumbled. She hadn't eaten since yesterday morning and even a crumb would do. Allele stood in front of her with the sole of his left foot planted on the bench next to her and his other foot on the ground, his hands in his sweater pockets.
"Aight here's the plan...ya'll listening?"
"Yeah." Cilia said, sitting next to Iris and rubbing her back soothingly. They were all starving and didn't have a dime on them.
The ten grand Allele stole from his mother had ran out a long time ago. Neither of them ever having growing up to learn the value of a dollar, didn't really know about saving money. They had it so they spent it. Everyday their breakfast, lunch and dinner was something big and extravagant. They were in the salon and barbershop every week and always went to the city and purchased the most expensive clothes. Anything they wanted they would buy. The money slowly started to go but having ten grand among three ten year old kids, they wouldn't really notice that. It wasn't until they were down to the last five hundred dollars by the end of that year did they realize they were in trouble. And when the money finished out completely, they had to resort to stealing, lying, and pickpocketing for the last three years to survive. They had become real street rats.
"Okay. It's gonna be the same as always. Iris you stay here and we'll go in and get the food. Cilia you ready?" Allele asked. He had gotten taller but was still the same weight. His face changed, beginning to make him handsome instead of the little cute boy he use to be. He had dark brown eyes and a nice smile. His hair grew a lot longer and he now kept it in a puff instead of braids like before.
Cilia got up and cracked her knuckles. She was always ready. Minutes before Allele had been patrolling a local corner store just to see how many people were working in there and to memorize the layout of the store. Now it was time to get their lunch and dinner. Cilia was his partner in crime, who usually served as a distraction while he did the stealing. This is how it's been for the last three years. Their job was to take care of Iris. They would go in and get the food and bring it back home for all of them to eat.
"We'll be back Iris, hold on." Cilia said kissing her cheek.
Allele and Cilia walked into the store together but as soon as they walked in Allele went straight for the back and Cilia walked up to the counter. The fat Middle Eastern man behind the counter didn't even notice Cilia at first because he was too busy trying to break his neck to see the boy who went toward the back.
