I held onto Alvin as if my life depended upon it. For the first time in fourteen years I felt as if I had somebody that I could share my life with. His scent filled the room. It was like a mixture of passion, love and sex combined into an alluring smell.
I loved being held by him, but at the same time a part of me felt wrong for wanting him in such a way. Would Dave or any of our friends accept us for being together? If they won't be able to accept us, what will happen? Will they separate us, or kick us out onto the street?
As I continued to ponder what might happen, Alvin nudged me with his hand. I looked up at him and forced a smile. He asked in a solemn tone that sounded more like a statement than a question, "I guess this means we're a coupe now...?"
"I would say so." I replied.
He continued, "Do you think we should tell Dave and Theo?"
I thought for a moment before I responded, "I think we should tell Theo and see how he reacts to it before we tell Dave or anybody else. We need to gauge his reaction before we go off telling the world."
Just as Alvin was about to speak, he got a call from Theodore.
"Hey, sure I'll tell him. Yeah, I think he'd love that. I know I will. Okay, I'll see you then." he said into his phone then put it on the night stand.
Alvin jumped to his feet and scrambled to clean the room. He threw my clothes at me and urged me to get dressed. As I fumbled with the legging on my pants I asked, "What's wrong?"
In a frantic tone he responded, "Dave and Theo will be home in a little while. We have to make them think nothing happened. If Dave finds out he'll kill us. Everything has to be absolutely perfect or he'll know something's wrong."
I jumped off the bed and ran down stairs to make sure everything was in order. Nothing was out of place. To avoid suspicion, I put two plates in the sink. I ran back up to our room and rejoined Alvin. We sat on his bed. He pretended to read a comic book while I thumbed through a dictionary. It was the first thing I could find.
My eyes landed on a word that I knew would be used if we were to tell everybody. It had to be irony that the first word my eyes focused on was incest. No sooner than I turned the page, Theodore and Dave walked into the room.
He greeted us then departed to do a close inspection of the house. Theodore began to unpack his clothes when we heard Dave yell, "Alvin, Simon, get down here immediately!"
"Coming Dave." We replied in unison.
As he crossed his arms and gave us a stern look he proclaimed, "I couldn't be more....thrilled about how you kept the house."
We let out a sigh of relief as he continued, "I guess Alvin is starting to grow up after all. Maybe next time I'll let him stay by himself."
Alvin and I walked out of the kitchen. As we did, he knocked over a picture onto the floor.
"Sorry Dave." Alvin said as we continued to make our way upstairs.
Theodore sat on his bed waiting for us to re-enter the room. He told us every detail of his trip with Dave. Once he was finished telling us about every little detail, he went downstairs to make us all dinner.
I stayed with Alvin in our room and talked with him about telling Theodore. It was agreed that while he cooks dinner we would tell him. I could hear the shower going. No doubt that Dave would be in there for at least an hour.
We stopped at the bottom of the stairs and Alvin proclaimed, "I'm scared to tell him."
I reassured him, "Everything will be okay. He's not cruel like other people are."
I grabbed his hand and we walked into the kitchen. Theodore was cutting up ingredients and putting them into a big pot. I took a seat at the table and inhaled a deep breath.
I explained, "Theo, I have something to tell you and before you say anything, just remember that we're family."
"Go for it." He replied as he grabbed an onion and began to chop it.
"Well, there's no polite way to put this. Alvin and I are...we're together now." I replied.
"Yeah silly, you've been together all weekend." He stated as he smiled at us.
Apparently his innocence was protecting him from understanding what I meant. I stood and Alvin did as well. I held his hand and stated again, "Alvin and I are together."
He seemed to be shocked, but he pretended it didn't bother him when he stated, "Just as long as you're happy, I don't care. I just hope that you won't be fighting with each other all the time."
Alvin stated, "We'll answer any questions if you want to know about this." Then he and I hugged Theodore and thanked him for being so understanding.
"I don't mind you guys hugging me, but I have to stir the soup." Theodore stated somewhat jokingly. He returned to cooking.
We sat down and told Theodore how our weekend went, excluding a few details. He didn't need to know just yet that Alvin and I have already experimented with each other. Maybe some day we would tell him, but not today.
