Wendy's POV
A new city... A new school...ugh just perfect.
What if they didn't like me, the students? I'm already the genius nerd, I don't want to be a loner either.
I shook the doubting thoughts from my head as I looked up at the huge school building.
Midtown High
I heard the busy city sounds of New York behind me. The honking horns and sirens blend together in a constant screeching that people here seem oblivious to. It's all background noise to them I suppose, while I still have trouble sleeping with the constant shouting of drunken men in the streets.
Gotta love the city.
Of course though, I've always wanted to come here. My parents however, were always hesitant. As if the city held some bad memories from when they grew up here.
Then Dad got sick, and everything changed so abruptly. It was cancer, at least that's what the doctors think. It was some weird mutated gene, that had no treatment, let alone a cure. Dad spent the last weeks of his life at home, with Mom crying herself to sleep and me quiet for days at a time. He tried, so hard, to assure us it would be alright. But when the time came, we lost it.
Mom moved here, I'm guessing wanting to remember Dad as much as possible. They were sweethearts since high school, this exact high school to much of my surprise. This place held a lot of meaning.
I took a deep breath and looked down at my outfit. I had on navy blue skinny jeans with a black tank top and red and black plaid flannel on top. My worn out black converse molded comfortably to my feet and I adjusted my knit navy bean on my head. I wasn't as...feminine looking as some of the girls I see here, but I was comfortable. I readjusted my black oversized glasses walked into the faded brick building, holding tightly to my backpack straps.
My first class was AP Physics.
So yes, I was a bit on the intelligent side. But when you're parents were both scientists, you kind of pick it up. I sighed to myself. I was probably going to be the only 16 year old in the class. Just another reason to pick on the new girl.
I walk in a few minutes late, of course because I got lost and no one tried to help me.
"Ah you must be Wendy Parker yes?" a man in his late 30's with light blonde stubble on his face and his hair reaching the back of his neck in a short ponytail said to me as I walked in.
"I'm Mr. Torrance." He smiled warmly at me and I nod back. Quickly I scan the class and noticed that it was, in fact, filled with smart looking seniors.
Only Junior here, can I have a sarcastic yay?
"You can sit next to Mr. Stark over there." He nods, and I look towards the empty seat in the back. Next to it was a boy, who actually looked closer to my age, with dark hair tousled to the side and icy blue eyes. His skin was fair, like he didn't go out much this summer like every other beach tan face in the room. He shot me a lopsided grin and waved me over.
I shyly make my way down the aisle and it suddenly it hits me like a wave.
Stark?
As in the famous Tony Stark?
"Hi, I'm Jason." the boy smiled and stuck out a hand. I raise an eyebrow in surprise at such an odd gesture but shake it anyway.
"Wendy."
"Yeah, the teacher kind of just mentioned that." He replied with a smirk and I can feel my cheeks heat up in embarrassment.
"By the look on your face before, I'm guessing you know who my dad is?" Jason chuckled and I nodded excitedly.
"Tony Stark, genius inventor, powerful business man and -" My voice quiets and I lose my enthusiastic tone.
"Iron Man." Jason finished with a sad smile, "Or at least he used to be."
Everyone knew the story of Iron Man. The hero who saved New York dozens of times, the man who made his suit in a cave with a paper clip and a some electrical tape.
The man who got injured 10 years ago in the Great Battle of the Pacific and became paralyzed from the waist down, giving up Iron Man for good.
And here I was looking at his son.
What an interesting first day this turned out to be...
