We were talking. Talking about why we were here, and our friends.
"If we expect to get out of here, we have to know more about what the place looks like," Paige uttered. She looked concerned, and I knew I did to, because I was. Her brown hair was messy and knotted and her gray shirt was stained with something that resembled fry grease. I combed through my long hazel-brown hair with my fingers.
"Right, but how are we gonna do that? Looks like we're in an insane asylum. And I don't think they would let us out easily,"I said.
"You're right, Emily, so I guess we should wait. They have to feed us sometime."
I nodded in agreement. She had to be right. I wasn't going to stay here, not long at least.
"Do you think anybody is looking for us?" Emily asked.
"Not with the lights out, no,"Paige said, her head hanging low. Just like the morale.
Then, there was a click and the padded door opened, to reveal a woman, with a girl behind her. The girl had blonde hair and white glasses. She was wearing a light blue jacket and a black cloth headband. The woman had blue eyes and chestnut hair. They stared at me for a moment. The woman came closer and nodded at the girl to keep watch. I prepared to fight. Outside the room we could hear a siren going off.
"It's ok, I'm here to help you," the woman said. Paige and I looked at her, trying to determine if we should trust her. Paige nodded, and I let down my defences a bit.
"I'm Veronica, my brother and I are going to help you, just trust me." She glanced between me and Paige. I looked at Paige and then after seeing her look of "take a chance" I reached my hand out to Veronica to help me up, then I did the same for Paige.
The girl motioned at us all to get moving, and we did with great urgency.
"I'm Abby, I'm with her," the girl, whispered. We ran down the short hallway, and eventually came to a study hall like room. We could hear footsteps coming closer, and we ran past a desk, through a doorway and into a scintillating hallway and in front of me was a girl with black hair with turquoise tips who was looking down the hallway to the right at Skye and a man who looked similar to Veronica.
☯
We stared at each other. I turned to run, but ran into three girls who stood behind me. One had white glasses while the others had brown hair Another was guarding the door, it was the woman who had mouthed I'll help you. Could I trust these people? Probably not, but I had no choice. Everyone began to come closer to each other. The man and the woman, who both had blue eyes and chestnut hair, embrased. I looked at the girls my age.
"Who are you? Are you with them?"I asked, implying the doctors who had recently chased me into here. Wait, I wondered, if we're all in here, why aren't they? Then a cylindrical can was tossed into the room it was releasing a gas of some sort.
"Cover your nose! Don't breathe the gas!" I yelled, quickly, covering my mouth. Everyone copied me, and we headed out of the room, and into the class coughing and gagging. Before me stood Lizzy. What had they done to her?
☯
I was taken back to the room I had escaped, they had taken away my tissue box purse and I assumed they destroyed it. All that work for nothing, I thought. They strapped me to the table this time, keeping me in place. They grabbed my head and turned it to the side, stabbing a needle into my neck. I could feel the thick liquid entering my veins, like a slug creeping under my skin.
They undid the straps on my wrists and lifted me up, lifting the back of my shirt in the process. I yelled an objection, and was met with the quick hit on the leg. It didn't hurt much, but I became quiet anyway. I didn't want to risk my life. They cut some deep incisions on my shoulder blades, and wiped away the blood. They slowly separated the skin from the bone and tissue underneath. They then poured a liquid in the newly opened pocket of air. and stitched it shut. They then made me get up and dunk myself into a clear liquid that smelled like alcohol, but I knew it wasn't. When they saw me holding my breath, they held me there until I had to let go of all the air I had stored in my lungs and began to breathe in the liquid. It was terrible and tasted like hand sanitizer mixed with rotting onions.
Afterwords, they let me rest for a moment and stretch until they grabbed my arms and put them behind my back, holding me above the elbow. I had felt them put something right under my chin and on the back of my neck, and cut a space between it. What it was I had no idea, but it hurt. On the way out of the room we went to the right and ended up at a classroom with a door behind the desk. I hung my head low, not wanting to go. We waited outside when Yui and Skye and some other people my age with two blue eyed adults who I assumed were in their twenties. They looked exhausted, so what did I look like?
☯
"Lizzy, what did they do to you?" I croaked out. She looked at me with tired eyes. She had reddened areas on her neck and arms. Most of them were by cuts and scars. The red, I assumed, was from irritation and blood that had stained her skin. Guards came up behind us and pushed us forward.
"Hey!" I yelled, already angry. "What did you do?"I yelled more, forcing the question upon them.
"We make better," said a guard who had a russian accent. I wondered if he had a family, or if anyone doing this had a family, like the man who said crackerjack. How are you going to make us better? I thought. They forced us all into rooms with shelves and cabinets that lined the walls. It looked like a surgical room. They strapped us to tables, they were going to work on us all at the same time. I punched one of the guards in the face and got a slapped. Then the guard was criticized for the action.
"If she's hurt, the results may be destroyed because of inaccuracy! It was hard to get this subject!" one of the doctors yelled. Maybe if I make myself injured, they will let me go, I thought. I smirked at the guard and laughed at him.
"You let a weakling like him boss you around? Ha! You don't even try to stand up for yourself? Wimp!" I teased him in a insulting way, making fun of his accent. He looked infuriated.
"Useless child!" he spat at me, "You know nothing!" He stormed off, I had lost my chance.
I glanced around the room, the nurses were forcing us up, and cutting marks on our shoulder blades. I could feel the blade cutting my skin every second longer she held it. They put something in the new cut. I had no idea what it was, it felt like a fluid. They then stitched the gash closed and moved to putting something in my neck. On the front and back. They then took me, and no one else, to another room. They set me on a table and pulled my eyelids open. It was pitch black in this office, to dark for me too see anything. They had lights. They gave me numbing drops and then began to cut my eyes. They added something underneath my irises. and then shined a bright light into my eyes. They told me to blink and I did. These were my eyes, I didn't want to be blind. Soon they removed the light and told me to close my eyes. I did as instructed and opened them when told. I could see.
They then dragged me back to the room from before, and took my wrist. They injected me with a thick, clear fluid. Like everything else, I had no idea what it was, but I would find out. A little bead of blood appeared over the puncture. Similar things were done to the others. Someone screamed. The people with the blue eyes and chestnut hair were beaten and put in confinement. I didn't know when we would see them again. We were trapped.
