I was dreaming of running. Running away from here. I was running on all fours through the woods. I was being chased, I could tell because I was panting. If this was a relaxing run, I would stop to rest. Branches snapped behind me. My feet were quiet, the movements fluid. I came to a lake. Large leaves from the trees towering over the water layered themselves on the reflective surface. I was cornered.
I turned to face the same men in black suits who kept me there. The 'security'. My eyes darted around to find an exit. I turned and faced the water. It began to ripple. I looked above me to see Emily, seemingly floating on the air. The water rose up and swallowed the men and myself. Emily had made a bubble for the water to go over. I was dry.
While the men were on the ground, slipping on mud, I followed Emily. She took me to Skye, Paige, Elizabeth, and Abby. We were all together. We had done it. They looked at me with concerned faces, as though I weren't myself. I probably had dirt caked on my hands and feet and leaves in my hair. I had no time to be concerned with that, though because the men had gotten up, and tailed us.
I jolted up from my cushioned spot on the floor. The men were around me, tranquilizer darts at the ready. They'd never done this before. I moved closer and they stepped back. Were they afraid of me? That could come in handy, I thought to myself. I realized that I was crouching, and tried to stand up. I already was. Had I just become shorter? I sat down and looked at my hands, but there were none, just large, soft paws with retractable claws. I stared at them, astonished. These were my hands? I looked at my back, it was white with ringed spots of black everywhere. Just like a snow leopard. The men parted ways at the doors and some scientists came inside the room. They were writing on clipboards and talking to each other. The first one to enter spoke first.
"Finally developed the métamorphe genes as intended. Seems to be a fluid change. I see no injuries, do you Arron?"
"No sir, no injuries. It seems that it has developed slowly, but it properly emerged due to that. No mistakes," the second man, Arron, said.
"Good, we can't keep the mistakes."
There were mistakes? What happened to them? I thought. What would've happened to me if I had a mistake? I followed them closely with my eyes locked on their expressions. What had happened to me? What had they done?
I leapt up and over Arron. He was no longer in the way of the door and I ran out. They had left the door open. Was that intentional? I wondered as I sped past security guards who were now chasing me. I slammed into a heavy door like mine. It opened. Inside was a ready to leave Skye. She hopped up and looked at me for a moment. I moved my head saying Come on! She got the message and sat on my back. With her nestled in my fur, and holding on tightly, I ran to the next door. Everyone else was on the other side of the hallway by the classroom. We ran through the doors and waited in the hallway for them to get out of the chambers. I found myself standing normally again. I had my hands back once more and I was glad about it. Paige, Skye, Emily, everyone stared at me as if I was insane. What had happened? I didn't have time to think about it now. Together, we all ran out of the hallway, back into the classroom. Several of the guards stood in our way. I glanced to the left, I ran that way before, but not as far. I rammed myself into the wall of people. There was just enough room for us to go through. I shoved my friends through the opening before the men recentered themselves and grabbed me by the shoulders. I watched them run, they knew I could handle this myself.
