Jayden. ()()()

The next morning, Kayla isn't talking to me. She hasn't even looked at me.

"Kay, what's wrong?" I ask her, my mouth full with cereal.

"Jayden, please don't talk with your mouth full." Mom corrects me and I roll my eyes.

Kayla still doesn't look at me, but she grabs her orange juice and takes a drink.

Whatever. I've learned that when she acts this way, just to let her be. I've also learned that with Mom.

Dad taught me that a long time ago.

"Where's Dad at?" I ask Mom, standing up out of my chair, and heading to put my bowl in the sink.

When Kayla and I were growing up, Mom was very strict about neatness. She still is.

"Um," She places down her coffee cup. "Grandma needed him. Her back was hurting her again."

"He's been going over to Grandma's a lot." I mutter to myself, but Mom heard me anyway.

"You know she's getting older.. Your Dad keeps trying to talk her into getting someone to help her, but she's too stubborn."

I shrug. We haven't really been close to my Dad's side of the family. I love them, and I love the money and gifts they send us on Holidays, but even though they live in the same town as we do, I don't know them. None of them even come and visit us.

"Kayla, you ready to go?" I ask, grabbing my car keys off the counter.

She doesn't look up at me, but she stands up, letting me know that she heard me.

"Don't forget to put your bowl up, honey." Mom tells her. "Are you alright?"

Kayla puts on a fake smile for her, and picks up her bowl. "Yes, Mother. I'm just fine."

"Well, you're awful quiet."

Just drop it, Mom. I think. She's not going to talk to you, because she's mad at me.

And I think I have a clue why she's mad.

"I'm just tired. It's early."

"We need to go." I remind her. "Tick tock."
