Chapter 3: Arrival

I was left unsatisfied. My parents were definitely hiding something from me. From my dream to how my mother knew about it and her and father’s weird looks, there were too many things that seemed so off today. Whatever’s happening, it was definitely something big. I thought about everything over and over again while my sister and I were walking to school. I was still deep in thought when my sister suddenly shouted at me.

“Hey, Zeke, are you even listening to me?!” Allyssa glared.

“Hmm, yeah, what were you saying again?” I asked absent-mindedly.

She grunted and scowled. She’s always like this whenever I don’t listen to her. My sister’s a constant nagger and is a control freak when it comes to things about me. She’s like an old lady who always tries to meddle in my affairs. But she’s right most of the time, which only makes it even more annoying.

The truth is my sister and I am worlds apart. She’s a genius in all our subjects and a very good athlete too while me on the other hand, flunk my tests frequently and are not allowed to do sports because of my genetic dysfunction. And other than that, she’s not bad looking too. We both have the same eye color and dark black hair which we inherited from our mom. But unlike her, I inherited dad’s delinquent-looking eyes while she got mom’s dark deep-set eyes. And everyone always says that we both look like our parents when they were younger. She’s pretty short but it only makes her even cuter. She is simply, a high class sister.

“You’re not even listening to me! C’mon! I was talking about the rumor I heard yesterday about a new transfer student coming today!” she said trying to control her annoyance. She was definitely pissed.

I simply grunted then brushed my hair off my face and spoke.

“So? What about it? A new student’s coming to our class. I don’t see anything weird about that”, I say trying to act nonchalantly.

“Yeah, but still, it’s already July. Isn’t it a bit fishy that that person enrolled a bit late?” she asked with her usual excited voice.

“Maybe that person got caught in an accident and had to rest?” I say trying to avoid getting her switch turned on.

“Well that’s a possibility but what if he or she had other motives”, she said pointing her index finger at me and looking with excitement.

“Sis, c’mon, we’re studying at one of the least known public high schools in the country in a town where not much happens. Do you seriously believe that whoever this person is, he or she will have ulterior motives about the school?” I sighed.

“That’s the beauty of it! No one’s expecting her to have other motives, so when it happens it would be totally unexpected! It’s amazing!” she exclaimed as if having another one of her eureka moments, “And besides, that person might be one of your new friends. You really should get some more other than that ‘hunk-of-meat’ named Sanders”, she said shifting to her mocking tone again.

“Well that would be great but I’m afraid my dear twin sister’s nerd syndrome would just scare him away”, I replied trying to mimic her tone.

“Oh shut up”, she said with a smile while moving past me.

The giant, rusted gates of our school loomed over us. The four, old three-story buildings placed at right angles with each other stood like a giant’s throne ahead. The weather was perfect and the air felt fresh while the sun’s gentle rays touched my skin. It’s such a good day. It’s a shame I’ll have to spend it trapped in a classroom.

                                *************************************

We walked past the gate and into the hallway of the first building. The colors of the hallways change every year and this year it was painted light green which made it more pleasant. The walls were lined with lockers and some of the students were already checking theirs. I was still deep in thought when a powerful hand suddenly yanked my right ear, causing me to twist into a “c shape” while trying to free my ear. The pain was so great and sudden that it made me let out a little yelp. I tried to see who it was that was gripping my ear and that was when a familiar voice spoke.
