Chapter 4: The beginning of the end

School ends at two o’clock but we spent half an hour showing Mila and Kim around the school. Jake and Marry Ann went ahead since they have student council duties. And all the time, Jake had a suspicious look on his face, while Marry Ann kept on glancing at me and my sister, as if expecting something to happen. Camille and Mark kept casting their eyes away whenever Mila and Kim speak. I don’t know if I’m just being paranoid or they were all acting too conspicuous.

“Zeke, are you okay?” Allyssa popped up beside me.

“Yeah, I”, I say suddenly surprised because we were already standing in front of the school, “I’m okay.”

“Are you sure? You look like you have a fever”, she said worriedly as she put a hand on my forehead.

“I’m fine, I just have a little headache, that’s all”, I say shrugging it off. I felt a little creeping pain at that moment but I tried to clear it off my head.

“Hey guys”, Mark who was walking beside Mila said, “you coming or what?”

“Yeah, be there in a minute”, Allyssa replied then she turned to me and spoke in a curious tone, “Do you think they’re hiding something from us? I mean everyone? They’ve been acting a little off since this morning.”

“I know. But I don’t think they’ll tell us if we ask them. Let’s just go and ask mom and dad over dinner, they’re the only two people in the world who can’t hide secrets from us”, I say as I walked to where Mark is.

Allyssa walked beside me and whispered, “You’re right but they’re good at keeping it away from us.”

“Guess you’re right about something weird happening today”, I chuckled.

“Of course I am. I always am you know?” she grinned.

“Don’t let it get to your head”, I say while messing her hair again. She dodged and slapped my hand.

“You two look like you’re always having fun”, Camille said as we approach her.

“I know right? Sometimes I wish I had a twin sister too because of these two”, Mark said with a grin as we continued walking towards the gate.

“Well it has its perks,” Allyssa replied, “but I had to go through eight years with this dweeb who doesn’t shower in the weekends and leaves his stuff lying around until I got my own room. Can you believe that?”

“Yeah,” I replied, “and I had to endure eight years of nagging from my sister who was a clean freak and always goes ‘where is this?’ and ‘where is that?’ when what she’s trying to find was only underneath her bed”, I said mock response.

“That’s great. I wish me and my sister were like that”, Kim who was silent since we left school suddenly spoke and her eyes were sincere.

“Why? Are you guys always fighting or stuff?” Allyssa asked.

“Nah. We just, plainly have a little sibling rivalry”, she replied with a sigh and for the first time she smiled.

“That’s pretty normal you know. Zeke and I have that too. Like this one time when we were sharing a cake and mine was like two or three inches thinner and his had a cherry on top while mine didn’t. And I was like ‘Hey that’s not fair!’ and he was like ‘You have to be conscious about your weight sis, all these carbs will go to your butt one day and it’ll sag’. And I was like ‘shut up! I’ll eat whatever I want!’ and he was like ‘I’m only concerned about you!’ Can you believe that?!” Allyssa exclaimed.
