Chapter Eight
I lead the way into the living room, where Grace sat stretched out on the couch with a Family Circle magazine. The sight reminded me horribly of my mother."Grace, this is my dad, Lukas." I gestured to the man beside me. Grace nodded.
"Thank you for aiding in the birth of my girlfriend." She said without a single hint of amusement. I cracked up.
"Grace!" I laughed, smacking her lightly on the arm.
"What? Come on, I thought it was funny!" She began to grin. "So, Lukas, what do you think of us together?" Grace asked, turning serious. She was quite blatantly testing him.
"I think you both make a wonderful couple. I'm happy Alice has found someone to share her time with, and I hope you know that I will break you if you hurt her." He smiled sweetly.
"I like this one." Grace giggled, looking at me, then back at Dad. "And as for Alice, she's the most incredible girl I've ever met. I wouldn't trade her for anything." She started swooning, her rich, brown eyes taking an even more dreamlike quality than usual.
"Glad to hear it." Dad said proudly.
"You found yourself a great girl and she deserves the best." He smiled at me.
"Dad..." I groaned, embarrassed. Although, I was very glad Dad bad Grace had hit it off so easily.
I looked back and forth between the two, the edges of my mouth turning up. Mom would never have been like this. She would have rolled her eyes and snorted at Grace's first impression. Dad was different. Dad was better.
"Come on, Alice, I gotta give you some shit!" Dad grinned.
"Yeah, yeah." I waved him off. Grace pulled me back into her chest and stretched her legs out once more, my own on the other side. All Dad did was smile wider.
"You guys are kind of adorable."
Grace scoffed. "Of course we are, I'm part of this couple!" She pretended to check her nails like a celebrity.
"Grace is pretty cute..." I smiled lovingly, tapping her nose lightly before leaning forward and giving her a kiss.
"Awe," Dad crooned.
"Oh, hush." I replied. "Now, let's talk about the reason I'm here. Why did that girl try to rip me apart?" I asked, feeling Grace tighten her hold around my body a bit.
"When an alpha wants a mate, he will stop at nothing to get her. Since you are supposed to be his mate, he's sending every wolf in his pack to take you to him. Even I should be trying to tie you up and ship you off." Dad replied.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa! What? This guy's trying to get some with Alice?" Grace demanded, quickly getting angry.
"Calm down, Gracie, I won't let him take me. I love you and only you." I cupped her cheek and gave her a kiss. "It's okay."
Grace seemed to settle down, sinking back into the couch again.
"Yes, Alpha Kai believes Alice is his mate."
"Over my dead body!" I said furiously. "The last time he saw me, he wanted nothing to do with me. Now all of a sudden he thinks I'll screw him? Is he not aware I'm a lesbian? Or that I have a girlfriend? Besides, what's to stop you from shipping me to him with a neon 'fuck me' sign on the box and a skimpy maid outfit? Aren't you supposed to 'respect your alpha' or some shit?" My voice rose higher and higher, until I was full on shouting at my poor father.
"He doesn't know you're a lesbian, Alice! And I would never do that to you! How dare you? I'm your father. I don't want you anywhere near Alpha Kai! I simply wanted to avoid conflict, but there's no way I'm letting him own you as if you're property on the market!" He yelled back.
