Chapter twelve
My lungs burned and my chest ached. I could feel the rawness in my throat as I prayed Kai wouldn't outrun me. I had to be faster.

He let out a loud, angry growl and kept chasing me. I was a newblood; Kai would surely catch up. I had to lose him. I zigzagged past cars quickly, but I could feel my speed depleting just as fast.

I turned sharply and went back the way we had come. Since Kai was bigger, he took a bit longer to follow me. It was all I needed.

I dove instantly under a car and shimmied out the other side, ramping up the speed until I couldn't hear Kai's ferocity.

Eventually, I had to stop. The flames licking inside my chest had me panting heavily. My paws ached from running so hard. The pads stung from hot pavement.

Mentally, I mapped out where another forest was and began walking there. People don't like wolves in the city. I'd been lucky not to have gotten caught by Animal Control by now.

"Carra!" I called in a whisper, sticking to the shadows of the community.

The young grey wolf shot her head up, a massive grin appearing. She ran towards me and tackled me.

"Ali!" She smiled happily.

"Yeah, yeah, it's me. We have to get out of here, now." I said desperately.

Carra nodded and we both ran to her car. Each of us shifted into our human selves and hurried into the car. In the mirror, I noticed a gleaming pair of eyes.

"Carra, drive." I said lowly.

She followed my gaze, her eyes popping wide. Carra quickly turned the key in ignition and split out of the community.

"Where to?" She asked.

I shook my head, beginning to feel discouraged. "Go to my Dad's cabin. I have to pick up Grace and him."

"You get Grace, I'll get your dad!" Carra yelled, running into the house, which was, of course, unlocked. I followed after her, bursting toward Grace. She looked up from her magazine, a smile spreading on her face before I yanked her up off the couch.

"Ow, what the hell?" Grace demanded, running behind me.

I didn't stop. "We need to leave, right now." I said hurriedly.

I opened the door and threw her inside, muttering a quick apology while I slammed the door, booking back into the house for Carra and Dad. I found the girl trying desperately to move him.

"Dad, come on, we need to go!" I shouted angrily. I was utterly done with his bullshit. He didn't move.

"Fucking bless it!" I screamed, shoving him powerfully out of his chair. He landed with a thud, a look of genuine surprise on his face. I scowled.

"Grab his arms. We lift on three. One, two, three!" Carra and I picked him up and carried his thrashing body out the door. We got him in the car, immediately locking it while we got in.

Dad had the most furious look I'd ever seen. "What the fuck?" He yelled.

"Carra, drive. Dad, you needed to fucking move your ass! So I carried your stubborn butt into this damn car, now shut up!"

Silence. Good. I let my breathing slow down as I calmed. "Grace, are you okay?" I called shortly after, remembering with a grimace the way I'd thrown her into the car.

"Yeah, I'm good." She replied softly.

I nodded.

Carra was next to break the silence. "Where are we going?"

I blinked rapidly, trying to think of a plan. "Three states over. Fanciest hotel you can find." I said finally.

Carra nodded, set her jaw, tightened her grip on the steering wheel, and drove on.

Maybe I was paranoid. "Can we, uh, maybe drop this car, too?"

She glanced at me. "I suppose..."

So we all rode, furious, for two hours in a small, stuffy little car. When we reached another dealership, Carra looked very anxious. She began whispering goodbyes to her tiny car. I tried not to laugh.

"How much for a new truck?" She groaned in displeasure, swinging open the door.

The clerk behind the counter laughed, raising an eyebrow. "That depends, darlin', how much are you willing to spend?"

I stepped up. "Twelve grand."

Carra looked at me. "No, Alice, I can't let you pay for it."

"It's fine." I replied, laying a hand on her shoulder. "You're helping me so much. I can do this." I turned back to the clerk. "Give me something big and powerful."

The woman smiled. "I got just what you need. There's a truck in the garage out back. I'll bring it around front for you."

"Thank you." I smiled back as she left through a side door.

"Alice?" Grace's soft voice called out.

"What's up, baby girl?"

Grace just giggled. "I want a kiss." She said happily.

I felt my heart swell with love for her at the sight. She was utterly adorable. I grinned wildly, feeling like a character in a movie or romance novel, and leaned up as far as I could on my toes. I let my hand cup her face as I drew out a long, sweet kiss from her strawberry lips.

"I love you." She whispered, her forehead on mine, eyes gleaming.

"I love you too." I gave her another kiss before setting back down.

Grace wasn't having it. She immediately picked me up off the ground while I clung to her shoulders, laughing like a lovesick pony.

"Gracie!" I squealed as she held me close, burying her face in my long red hair.

She shrugged. "Couldn't help it. You're too damn cute!" She growled in my ear. I felt my mouth go dry.

"Gracie, you're gonna be undressed in about ten seconds if you continue that." I whispered.

Her eyes lit up devilishly. "Promise?"

I choked, frowning. She laughed.

I heard Carra clear her throat behind us. "Alice, everything is ready."

I felt my ears heat up a bit. Grace put me back on the ground.

"Alright, everyone, let's get going!" I said loudly, clapping my hands together to get their attention.

Grace and I moved into the garage where a giant, lifted '95 Dodge Ram 1500 stood, towering menacingly over us. Carra was instantly in love.

"I call driving!" She proclaimed, running excitedly up to the nightmare-black vehicle. She climbed up into the cab and laid on the horn. "Let's get this show on the road!" She yelled, obviously feeling truly badass. Possibly moreso, than the truck.

I rolled my eyes. "Everyone aboard!" I called.
