"You promise you'll write when you're off in the war?" You asked your husband, John Laurens, who currently had you wrapped in his arms.

"I promise dear, I can't go by a single day without thinking of you, not seeing you alone, scares me. This will be rough for the both of us." He told you, then kissed your forehead.

"I don't want you to leave.." You pouted. John gave a light chuckle.

"(Y/N), my dear... I don't want to leave either, but I have to. For America, for our future, for you." He took his hand and ran his fingers through your hair.

"Promise me you won't die." You laid your head against his chest, he took a minute of silence before speaking again.

"I promise you, I will always come back" He rubbed your back.

"I love you John." You pulled away from his chest and kissed him on the lips.

You sat on the edge of your bed, fighting back the pang of worry in your chest. John hadn't sent a single letter in weeks! You kept your hopes though, you had heard news of the war ending, and that the troops would be home sometime that day.

And that sometime was right then, as you heard a knock on the door. You rushed drown the stairs, careful not to trip on the skirt of your dress. You took a breath before opening the door, you'd get to see your love again!

You swung the door open with a smile, which disappeared as you saw not John, but General George Washington.

"Hello Sir, welcome home. What can I do for you?" You asked the general, he took his hat off.

"Mrs. Laurens, it's a pleasure to see you. I come bearing news about the whereabouts of your husband." He looked at you in pity, which confused you.

"Yes? Where is he?" You asked eagerly, millions of things popped into your head on where John could be.

"He's... dead. He fought with great strength and bravery, and he died with honor, you in his thoughts, no doubt. I'm so sorry Mrs. Laurens." He said, looking to the ground in sorrow.

Those words broke you, your heart, your life.

"No.. no.. He's.. he's not.." You denied it, laughing, tears in your eyes. You struggled for air.

"Mrs. Laurens, are you alright?" The general stepped closer, you swatted him away.

"I'm alright! I'm fine! Just go away!" You stopped laughing, he wasn't joking. Your beloved husband was dead and gone, only a memory now.

"Mrs. Laurens, is there anything I can-" He was interrupted by you slamming the door, blocking you off from the rest of the world.

You walked into the living room, and sat in a chair. You sobbed, tears staining the skirt of your dress, you cried there for the longest time. You cried so loud, you were unable to notice your husband's friends, Alexander Hamilton, Lafayette, and Hercules Mulligan, had entered the home.

They all surrounded you, giving you comfort, Alexander wrapped your shaky body in his arms, Lafayette and Hercules stood beside you, their hands on your shoulders.

As you sobbed, you swore you could hear John's voice.

"Don't cry my love, I will always be with you."

"Always" You muttered, smiling slightly.
