My eyelids fluttered and I’m sure I caught a glimpse of shimmery green eyes looking down at me. My body ached and my skin felt hot.

“Come on let’s go, he’s alive it’s okay”

I’d heard him say that, I heard someone say that. I opened my eyes fully and the sight in front of me frightened me. What the fuck had just happened? The petrol station was on fire; I looked around and saw I was just lying on the cold pavement floor. Several people were running past me trying to get away from the building.

I looked down at my clothes, they were dirty, scruffy and a little burnt. Had I been in that fire? What happened why was I even here? I tried to think back but I just kept coming up blank. I had no idea what I was doing at the petrol station or how I got out the fire. I stood up slowly just checking whether or not I had broken anything. I was fine in that sense.

I thought back to what I’d heard “Come on let’s go, he’s alive it’s okay”. Someone had pulled me out that fire someone had saved me… why? Or more importantly how? I saw firemen trying to tackle the flames; an ambulance was checking people to make sure they were okay. I patted down my pockets; my phone was still there.

I pulled it out and checked the time. Oh shit I was already 20mins late to work. Slightly confused and mentally disturbed I turned my back on the petrol station and continued walking to work, my iPod earphones were still hanging around my neck. So I put my earphones in and turned the music up. Drowning out everything else.

I worked at the local supermarket. It was a boring job but I needed the money and the distraction. But work was getting too repetitive it allowed me time to think, thinking time that I didn’t want. I got this job to take up my free time so I wouldn’t think. My manager didn’t even notice I was 30mins late he was a useless supervisor.

I jumped on the tills and stayed there for the whole of my shift. I thought about the fire whilst I was there, I couldn’t remember much, but I definitely remember that guy’s voice. I thought back to what I was doing before I woke up. I was taking money out the cash point in the petrol station. I was just about to put my card in the machine when there was a pain in the back of my head.

And then I woke up on the cold pavement with a raging fire going on at my feet. I bit my lip worriedly as I put through Mr Palmers usual shop. What happened? I glanced around paranoid, was that fire an accident? My hands started to shake and my heart rate picked up. I closed my till and walked off into the back of the store.

I heard the customers in the queue complaining and hissing at me, but you know what, fuck them. I felt like I was going to have a panic attack. I opened my locker and a plastic bag fell out. In it were lots of different coloured pills I picked them up before looking around and making sure the locker room was empty. I fished out two little blue pills and swallowed them dry.

I sat and breathed for a bit before I felt the buzz kick in. I put the pills away and went back on tills, smiling at all my customers. I know what you’re probably thinking that I’m a disgusting druggie, but some of those pills were prescribed because of…. Yeah and the rest were just for erm emergencies and recreational purposes.

Okay maybe I liked taking pills but so what, everyone does something they know they shouldn’t, I just do mine to get me through life, through one day without breaking down and crawling into a shell. My life was pathetic, the pills was the only sort of buzz I got. It was late when I finally finished working. I put my earphones in and left the store.
