"Yes, mother." I dragged myself out of bed, made the bed, and brushed my bushy sienna hair. I could not let anyone see myself now. We were one of the most respectable aristocratic families in England. The fact that I must be presentable at all times had been drilled into my head for the last 18 years since infancy.
It was my 19th birthday in 20 days' time my father had decided to throw a lavish banquet for me. This was not what I liked, of course, but I had learned to shut my mouth and learn my place.I despised the tailor's shop. Being forced in stuffy ballgowns and wearing silk gloves was not my idea of fun. Not that I knew enough fun to know. My mother picked the stuffiest gown and the smallest gloves. Just my luck.
