So I've decided that Kris and I are going to be friends now." Kai stated out of nowhere as he accompanied Tao up the stairs of their dorm.
"Oh really?" Tao asked, unconvinced. "Cause yesterday I got to spend my entire four-hour lab reading texts from you about all of the dirty things you'd like to do to him."
Kai just shook his head and chuckled, as though recalling a distant, wonderful memory.
"That wasn't fun for me." Tao insisted, though he knew that he had already lost Kai to the part of the smaller man's mind that dreams up those kind of depraved scenarios. "For one thing, you know that I really like him so reading about how you would enjoy defiling him is not as entertaining as you may think. And for another, it's very distracting. At one point, the lab instructor asked me what my results were and I was so busy reading your texts that I answered 'leather ring'."
Kai stopped just outside Tao and Kris's door to ponder this. "Tao, I remember mentioning a ring, but I know I didn't say 'leather'. If I had used any adjective at all it would have been 'studded' or 'vibrating'."
Tao blushed a little. "No, you just said you would use a ring on him. I added the 'leather' part myself."
"Nice." Kai winked obscenely. "Well he's been a very bad boy and you need to punish him so..."
"No. Uh... no." Tao ran his hands through his hair and looked down at his shuffling feet in discomfort. "Actually, I was thinking... um..."
"Oh!" A light bulb went on in Kai's mind just as the door swung open. "You want the leather ring on yourself!"
"Hey guys."
"Hey Kris." Tao didn't bother looking up from his feet at what he was sure was Kris's very puzzled gaze. What the else was new?
Kris drummed his fingers on the door frame for a moment before finally breaking the awkward silence. "Leather, huh?"
"I tried to recommend something a little more high-tech," Kai happily chimed in, "but Tao's a bit old-fashioned when it comes to props."
At that moment, Tao hoped with all his might that if he glared hard enough at Kai, he would explode into tiny bits of y goo.
No such luck."I don't know." Kris seriously considered the absurd topic at hand. "I think old-fashioned is probably the way to go. Too much electronic buzzing and sparking, someone's bound to electrocute things that shouldn't be electrocuted. Besides," he added with a surprisingly comforting pat to Tao's shoulder, "there's nothing ier than a little leather."
Tao thought there couldn't possibly be anything that could break the oddly warm moment that formed as he and Kris exchanged small, shy smiles with one another. Of course, Tao hadn't considered Kai's innate moment-killing skills.
Kai suddenly enveloped Kris in a huge bear hug, squeezing his slim waist in his grip.
Tao and Kris both froze for a second before Kris raised an eyebrow and half-whispered to Tao, "This is interesting."
"Well, once you get to know Kai a little better you..." Tao began, then changed gears. "Actually, I know him way too well and this is weird even for him." Tao tried unsuccessfully to loosen Kai's death-grip from around Kris. "What exactly are you doing?"
Kai let go and backed up with an eerily wide smile. "I was hugging my new friend." Noting Kris's confused look, Kai explained, "I was telling Tao before, you and I are going to be very good friends. I've already decided this." With that declaration, Kai his heels and headed down the hall to his own room with a wave, "Have a good day, friend."
